Allowed without the need to get TÜV approval by an Tüv Engineer are only Parts which have a EWG Certification.

EWG -> European Union Economy

These Parts, for example some exhausts where the manufacturer went through the EWG Certification Process, are allowed to be mounted. But only in concunction with OEM Parts.
For Example, Muffler has EWG Certification you're allowed to run it on the car, but if you run a different than OEM Downpipe the EWG certification for the Muffler is nullified because it was not tested in concunction with that Aftermarket Downpipe.

Then there are Parts for example KW Coilovers which usually come with Tüv Certification Papers. After installing the Suspension you need to see a Tüv Engineer to have the car inspected. He then gives the go or no go. If go you get a paper which you have to go to the DMV with to have the Inspected Part put in your Cars Papers.

Parts without any EWG or TÜV Papers you would need to have specialized companies help you as most Tüv Engineers don't touch those.

If you bring the car over and go through the getting it Road Legal Process I would suggest you'd contact RHD Speedmaster (located near Landau) or Grizzly Racing (Wuppertal).

They import a lot of cars and get them on the road.

Ben Der: Great info! This approach may not be doable for the Subaru. Our 'import' may be covered under a SOFA agreement...possibly lessening the temporary use of the car in the country. More research is required.

Been reviewing your thread...quite a bit of handiwork you've done!

Thanks for the assistance.

Well, decision was made after some death noises from the transmission...store it for the duration in the states.

Unfortunate, but will replace it in the near term with another fun car.

Luckily, I have access to a storage facility rent free!

Located 1500 miles away...so took some time off and loaded the son and dog for a cross country road trip. 23 mpg later and nary an issue until arrival. Drive reinforced my enjoyment of the car - drove like a dream.

Upon arrival and sitting overnight...start up returned a significant knock until warmed up! My storage prep consisted of heavy dose of antifreeze, wax of the paint and wheels, and an oil change. Nothing unusual in the drained oil...hmmm. Along with a new trans...an refreshed engine may be in the cars in a few years...

Shot of the new fun car...should do us well at the Nurburgring and autobahn (heard it will do 180!).

You're aware of German Gas Prices?

Love the Camaro wouldn't mind one for myself, let me know when you're over here. Can hook you up with a Place at the Nürburgring to stay for a couple of days. Friend of mine works there.

Are you here September 1st already?
There the Rally Fun Day from our Subaru Club going, you could visit and get some ride alongs if you want

ben: I like it...still prefer the STI! But the numbers are equal or better...

No date for the move quite yet...likely end of October...just in time for snow tires, eh?

Will certainly connect when I arrive...looking forward to putting more miles on the Ring.

Made a visit to the midwest to see the sleeping STI...no change - still static:

To stave off the withdrawal the 'other' car is keeping me occupied...still slow compared to the STI!
