Default Installing Cobb Flex Fuel Before Tune

I have a tune coming up next month, and planning to add flex fuel to the mix.

It's a long drive to the tuner, so I'm wondering if I can just install the Cobb Ethanol Sensor and Fuel Pressure Sensor kits in the fuel line, but leave them unplugged until I drop off the car for tune. Assuming since they are just adding sensors inline that will be inactive, it will not affect the car.

Make sense?

Yep, there's no issue with having it installed before the tune. They're just in-line sensors. The flex fuel functionality has to be enabled with the tune before it'll actually do anything. That's what I did with my WRX after receiving my tuner's approval.

You can plug them in. Like Ebnash said the functionality is turned off. You already have pump and injectors installed and tuned?

Yes, I have tune for my current setup:
Intake
Injectors
FPR
3 Port BCS
Cobb DP
Killer B Headers/Up Pipe
etc.

I'm not happy with my current tuner, so I'm scheduled with another shop and thought I would go ahead and add the Flex Fuel Kit and tuned accordingly. Still toying with the idea of 20G Turbo, as well. Flex Fuel tune is expensive, so I might want to consider making the most of it and be done already.

Happy to help you out if you want to do an e-tune or come up and dyno tune at our facility. We have base flex maps for stg turbo and 20g.

Appreciate the offer, but I prefer to have someone somewhat local since I don’t really want to go down the eTune route. I did a lot of eTuning with my MS3 and it’s just not very convenient to have to go drive out to areas where I can do full pulls and wait for data turns. I prefer to just take a day off work and get it done in person. From there, I’d be ok with sending logs for issues that might pop up.

Luckily, I think I have now found a tuner I have confidence in to get me right.

I took my car back to my previous owner last week and took the day off. He found no real issues and like before, the car felt decent until I started putting down miles. It’s interesting because my MS3 always felt amazing after loading a map and after 100 miles of driving it would start to change and continually feel weaker and less crisp.

I’d like to be able to disable fuel trim learning to keep the map the way it’s originally designed.

To be honest, the OTS maps from Cobb seem completely stable and nothing changes over time. Unfortunately, my days of OTS maps are gone

I totally understand.

If tunes are changing after miles are put on the car the MAF cal, VE or injector scaling are wrong. Or the timing is nuts and the knock learning is trying to keep your motor alive. Regardless, that's not good.

We do have "OTS" maps for your exact setup with years of use and lots of miles if you want to try one out.

So, I installed the sensors and fuel lines and had not yet installed harnesses. I called Cobb last week and asked them if there was any harm in just plugging everything in since it would be activated until my tune. The person I spoke to initially said I could plug into my power and signal taps on O2 and TGV's, but not to plug into the sensors themselves. Then he came back and said, you'll be fine to just plug in everything.

So, this morning before I drove into work, I decided to go ahead and install the harness for the Fuel Pressure Sensor. Started the car and had immediate Right TGV Stuck Open code. Now, if the TGV is open by default, I really don't care. But since I really have no idea what is going on, I unplugged the harness and drove in.

Called Cobb and asked if the code was normal with hardware installed, but not activated in software. The guy was fucking clueless and said, I guess you should just unplug everything???

Why are these guys answering the phone to field technical questions if they have no clue. You would think the developer of this hardware would be able to advise you.

The only reason I care, is that I have to drive 100+ miles to get my tune and I don't want to be trying to plug in to the O2 sensor in the parking lot. I suppose I'll just have to ask them to plug things in and pay the extra fee.

Just annoying when you can't trust the "experts" advice...
