Default Low Profile OBD II Extension w/ Flat Ribbon Cable

I wanted to share with everyone the OBD II cable I just purchased to use with my Accessport to get that bulky connector and cable out of the way. It's a 3' low profile ribbon cable and I'm planning on just keeping it plugged in and stored inside the steering column. This will make it much easier to hook up and disconnect the AP, and it won't take up much room at all since it's a ribbon cable and can be cinched in a nice flat bundle.

$10 from Amazon isn't so bad compared to the 79 bucks COBB sells their Left/Right Exit low profile cables for!
Just Google this if the Amazon link ever goes bad:
Low Profile Right/Left Angle OBD 2 II Extension with Flat Ribbon Cable 3'/1m

Amazon Link:
Amazon.com: Low Profile Right/Left Angle OBD 2 II Extension with Flat Ribbon Cable 3'/1m: Automotive

Nice find.

Is there any reason this will not work for any AP, or opensource tools?

Given that this is just an OBD II extension cord, I'd imagine that anything that's meant to connect to an OBD II port would work the same with it as just plugging it into the port itself.

A better solution for 1/8 the price. Thanks for posting this I'm going to buy one for my Tactrix Openport 2.0. That is probably the best thing about this. If you go open source it still works

There are a number of different styles of these extension cords on Amazon, but this was the only one I found with the nice ribbon cable. I did read on NASIOC how someone used a 6' low profile cable and routed it through the center console into the arm rest area as well. Those go for about 8 bucks.

Here's one that looks to be about 10" long:
Amazon.com: OBD-II OBD2 16Pin Male to Female Extension Cable Diagnostic Extender 30cm: Electronics

And here is one that is 5' long:
Amazon.com: OBDII Extension Cable, 5ft (144201): Automotive

And here is a splitter version (1 female port;2 male ports. The description has this mixed up):
Right Angle OBD II 2 Y Splitter Cable 1'/30cm 1x Male and 2x Female J1962 Ports : Amazon.com : Automotive

I have a PLX gauge cluster that gets info from OBDII port.

Can I use a splitter on the OBDII port and log with my AP, but also still have my gauges getting info from it? (I realize there would be a lose in resolution)

I'm not sure whether or not your particular application will work, but here are some reviews from a similar splitter offered on Amazon (only difference is that it isn't low profile):

-"This is a very pratical purchase. It allows me to operate my Bully Dog programmer and my Progressive Snapshot at the same time without any problems between the two devices. Great Item!!!"

-"This cable provides me with easier access to the installed connector in my RV. I needed to augment my dashboard with digital gauges (Scangauge II, Ultragauge, etc) and still retain a connection for a portable code reader. This cable satisfies that need quite well."

-"This splitter works perfectly allowing the tracker to be on one side while leaving the other side available for diagnostics. The splitter gives no hindrances to the tracker or to diagnostic devices."

-"This splitter seems to split an OBD-II port with no issues. I was hesitant that the split might not fully transmit all data to two simultaneously attached devices, but - as far as I can tell - nothing is lost in the split. I have an "In-Drive" unit (State Farm's "Drive Safe & Save" tracker) and an Automatic Link (a little start-up company's device to help you monitor your fuel consumption and "green" driving habits). Both seem to report 100% accurately."

Update:
Gotta love the free trial of Amazon Prime; free 2 day shipping!! Check out how tiny this thing is!

Here's a picture of it plugged in. I like how the cable comes out towards the front of the car when it's plugged in. One thing to note; it's hard to unplug it once you've plugged it in since there's not much room around the sides to get your fingers in there. You'll probably need something to get in there and pry it off if/when it comes time to remove it.

Nice, no more possibility of knocking my tactrix cable out when I climb in and out!

Good find!

Ordered!
