Default rough sound when normally accelerating

Hey guys!

I'm having trouble lately with my stage 2 08 sti.

When the engine is cold it sounds normal but when it gets warm and I accelerate normally the sound changes. It's like the normal rumble becomes more aggressive to the point, that it's not normal to me! The car responds well when I go wot. But feels sluggish in normal condition.

It's more noticeable from secondth to fifth gear, between 1800 rpm to 2800 rpm.

I've logged my car, everything was normal, my a/f learning1 was between -6/+6. I had 0 engine roughness or misfire in the whole 2 hours of log. Knock correction was ok as well.

I have zero oil consumption, no smoke at startup. I just changed the spark plugs 2 weeks ago when it started to sound like that. My old plugs had normal wear.

It sounds like my cat is clogged. The downpipe (custom dp from lachute performance with magnaflow high-flow cat) was installed in 2008 after 5000km on the car, now the car has 113 XXXkm. Could it be that?

Can I check if I have problem with my cat without removing my downpipe?

I don't have a check engine light.

Or do you know what might be the cause of my problem?

I decided to make an appointment at lachute performance to check my car out but it's only in 10 days. I'm hoping it's not another ringland case!

Thank you!

-Simon

If it was a clogged cat you would get the symptom of engine being able to rev smoothly like normal but feels a lack of acceleration throughout "the whole rev range" but gets exponentially more difficult as the rev climbs. Do it enough times like 5 pulls and the temperature will skyrocket to overheat zone. Smell around for rotten egg smell or check your cat or look at O2 sensor in pitch black after pulls, if they look super red hot, the cat is about gone. I had this on my previous car, no codes and no rotten egg smell but cat was clogged. The O2 bung looks red hot in pitch black.

Roughness at 1800-2800rpms? Sounds like the "Stumble" to me. Does it feel like it kind of loses power for a second or two during those RPMs?

It feels slower, but no harsh hesitation!

Well I'd agree the this sound slike typical EJ stumble. But you driven this car long enough to recognize abnormal and it feels abnormal to you. Take it easy on the car till you get this resolved.

IMHO, to justify its' price, the S209 needs to perform at least as well as my moderately powered 05 built beater, and even that might not convince me to buy one cause my next STI isn't likely to be moderately powered.

Get it diagnosed first before you start throwing parts at it.
