Default Almost blew my motor for $1.12

I was driving to work this morning and noticed the yellow light (active spray) on my SMC meth control unit flickering. I pushed the test button a few times to see if it was sticking, but the light just kept on flashing.

So I pulled over and checked under the hood to see if anything was missing or broken and couldn't find a thing. I then checked to see if I was getting any pressure through the system on the gauge under the hood that is mounted to pump, I GOT NONE.

I was running late so I closed the hood and turned the AVC-R off and drove very easily until I got to work. When I got to work and got the chance to really look the car over I noticed the bolt that holds the water tank and fuse boxx together was missing and ground was hanging.

I am not sure if the bolt came loose and fell out or just broke but if you have an SMC kit please go an take a look at the bolts that hold the tank to the car and make sure they aren't loose. I would hate for anyone to loss a motor over a $1.12 bolt. Atleast I caught mine before I did any damage(I hope)

glad to hear you caught it in time. I would have hated to read a thread about why your motor blew.

Honestly you probably would have been ok if it hit once or twice. I have ran out of mix before, as well as a couple other people I know, none of us lost the motor. In fact my 05 STI ran out at 23PSI with a bunch of timing and a 11.7-1 a/f (a/f while the spray was on)

That doesnt mean it wasnt luck. Im just saying that a kit failure doesnt always mean a blown motor

FYI, its not just the SMC kit, its every kit out there. If the ground comes loose, your kit wont spray. Any bolt, anywhere, can come loose. SO make sure to keep an eye on your connections, just look it all over once in a while and make sure everything is tight and secure

exactly, this is why people who dont know what there doing should'nt install there own crap or do wiring jobs. because if you dont solder and heat shrink connections they corrode and dont work but people continue to learn this the hardway. good thing you didn't.

Hey now, stop scaring me. I was gonna start my install of my kit this weekend. I finished up all my presoldering, and it's about ready to go in, and I still have to choose a tuner though

I'm leaning towards heading to Austin and booking MZM. I just wish there was a tuner for the AP closer to Amarillo. I was going to have Keith from AWD tuning in Dallas tune my with the street tuner advance, but I just got off the phone with COBB, and they now say the release date will prolly be in the winter. I can't wait that long!

Dont be scared, its not hard. You just have to be CAREFUL. Not so much careful as PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU ARE DOING. And Do things RIGHT. Dont use POS crimp connections that they give you. SOLDER those connections and heatshrink them.

Cobb Advance tuner? Dont hold your breath. This winter means next winter more likely lol. I cant wait though, I have a lot of customers waiting for it.

No doubt. I`ve never had problems with crimp connectors in the past, although I always solder all connections for the important things! Yea, I'm surely not holding my breath for COBB right now, thats why I decided to go ahead with the install and find a good tuner either in TX or CO. TY for the advice!

tactrix

Cobb who? Won't be long now.

Oh and +1000 on solder and heatshrink. Especially on critical connections. A boost gauge with a butt connector or tap is fine, but not a pump or any of the other electrical connections. FWIW, there are no crimp connectors or the like on my car. Everything is soldered and shrinked, then wrapped with electrical tape as well.
