I will never get discourage because I know these 2 mods made a huge improvement over the stock setup and no one can tell me differently. I am happy with the difference it made, sure there are many other things that can be done for even better result but $$$ is something I don't have a lot of. Plus it's not necessary with almost stock hp/stock turbo to go crazy on ic mod. Here are a few pics of the final product. It's funny how I was just going to do one fan, than it leads to 2nd fan, heat shield, than add the 3rd fan. ![]() You can see the difference with the newer style vs the 2 older style fan on the right. The new one is well hidden under the scoop. ![]() ![]() Here I ran my right side brake duct to the turbo area. I am not sure I will keep it there but instead, I may run to the intake runners with smaller 1.5"-2" duct. I may to the same with the left duct? Keep the intake cool = more powa. IWSTI Addict since: Mar 2007 Trader Rating: (2) | fwiw, drove around with all fans on in 90+ degree yesterday. Idle for about 15min waiting for someone with AC running. No sign of heat soak even on the turbo side. With no data to prove anything ( hand feel/pressure ) but I strongly believed the fans create wind speed equivalent to highway speed (50 mph?) but maybe with higher volume of air. This could be real beneficial for autocrosser/slalom. Anyone has cfm flow for the stock scoop? |

IWSTI Addict since: Mar 2007 Trader Rating: (2) | With the positive result from the stock tm heatshield, I made one for the Turbo XS, and installed it back on the car. From my observation from the stocker HS; the endtank (firewall side of the tm) did get a little warm in certain condition because that side was left open. I was suprised it did got fairly warm in that area even thought there doesn't seems to be anything there except the tranny. To try to eliminate this condition, I added an extra shield to the back side on the Turbo XS. I seems to cured this problem. To make things easier on myself, instead of making the sides as one piece with the bottom, I made most of the sides separately than riveted to the bottom piece/plate. I used screws on the back so that I can removed it to unbolt the Y pipe if needed to. Not in the pic, but I did the thermo matt on the bottom plate and the side piece close to the turbo. I did try to close off some of the openning that was left opened in the first shield. |

I know this sounds harsh, but: I don't care how many small holes you have on the side, you are preventing airflow through the TMIC. If yo would try this setup at the track where you are actually making some heat, you'd burn your hand when you went to test it. Focus on preventing engine heat from reaching the TMIC, not preventing the IC from getting airflow. Here's an idea: Remove the TMIC from the car. seal the inlet/outlet. Take a 5 gallon bucket and pour it out onto the TMIC. Do the same without all the metal at the same pour rate. Which one empties quicker? | |

In no way, or I was not trying to imply that it flows the same volume of air as the stock scoop @ 50mph. I agreed with you 100% and this was one the 2 reason for doing this hs/fans mod - was to prevent heat from reaching the tm. I know there are better ways, but given the room, $, lack of tools - ie welding machines, metal forming tools etc.. this was the best I can do under the circumstances. Sure I wish their is a little more room under the ic or have a way of creating better air flow/unrestricted flow, but there's just isn't room with the tranny, turbo pipe, etc... under there. 3/4" is the best I can do. I know there's a little restriction but air is still being escaped. As you have already said, there are openings for the that purpose. The ideal mod would have been putting the fans on the bottom of the heatshield but we already know that is impossible/difficult because of limited room. My take on this is, it is better to have trapped cooler air than hot turbo/engine air coming through the tm. Does that make sense. | |

Fwiw, I popped my hood to see how the shield is working after a long drive, I can feel the heat from everywhere around and under the heatshield. Some part of the shields was very warm but the air gap between it and the tm keeps the tm cool to the touch. With the hood close and parked for any period of time, the tm will eventually get heatsoak. But once you get moving with the fans on, it will cool the tm quicker vs no hs/fans. IMHO. |

| Halliburton Mercenary | Unfortunaely, I did not measure pre-wrap temps. It is the SSAC "eBay" TMIC. I have a Spearco to replace that. FWIW- I safely made 410wtq on the TMIC if you want to buy it from me Last edited by fullerton; 09-03-2008 at 03:00 PM. |
