Default Warranty strut clunk???

The last time I took my car to the dealer to get serviced I told them that I had strut clunk coming from my back right hand strut. They told me they would check it out. When I got back to pick up my car they told me they couldn't hear anything. I drove away and didn't notice anything for a week or so but now have strut clunk again and it's back with a vengeance. My mom hears it, my brother hears it, but the subaru dealer doesn't. Should I take the mechanic for a drive or even have my brother and mom write a letter to them stating they have also heard the noise. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Dealer did the same thing to me. They must have re-lubed them though they stayed quite for a month or so. I'm just going to save up for some Ohlins.

No need for a letter from your mom ( ) Just ask that you go for a road test with a tech when you take your car in... you can show him the noise in person.

Yes have the mechanic take a ride with you so you can point the noise out to him/her.

Back in early 2004 I had them check it out and they told me they didn't hear anything, and I immediatly asked to have the tech ride with me. I was able to easily duplicate it, and they replaced both the rear struts. They did the same thing when they started clunking again about 6 months later (replaced both the rears). It seems like they have added yet another trick to their bag by greasing them up to make the sound go away. Sheisty!!

My car has been in three times for it. They are supposed to replace the tops and they never do. I have paid the warranty claim 3 times and have still not had it fixed. It is in the shop now and I made it very clear that I was not paying a dime till a technician and I drive the car after the work is complete.

I said a letter from my brother and mom. Did you think she was going to pin the letter to my shirt and send me to the dealership. I'm not a little boy I'm 25 years old. I just thought it would be easier if they knew other people have heard it also. This is in reference to Holycow's post.

I might have to make a similar warranty claim...but my question is since this seems to be a design flaw, why isn't this just a simple replace and go service? Unless they see that you've done some major suspension work, why would they hassle so much for a known issue?

seriously this is what i did:

1. Have tech sit in the backseat
2. Open Trunk
3. Stand on the trunk protector (or whatever its called at the edge of your trunk) and hop up and down on the back of the car...
4. Clunk, Clunk, Clunk
5. Profit!

the dealer should not warranty your "STi clunk". SOA is calling this noise normal for all STi's, and it is. all of them do it. there is no permanent fix with stock STi parts. no repair shop should replace parts that will not FIX the vehicle. you can replace the struts and hats all you want the problem will come back. there is nothing wrong with the struts or hats, they just make nose. the problem is within the strut itself(physical geometry), just as long as you are running the stock strut you will have this noise. i would be mad too if my car made this noise. but, if i owned an STi i'd already have coil-overs on it.

You obviously have never driven a car with the strut clunk. It is loud and obnoxious and they should be covered under warranty for being that loud.

the strut clunk isn't just noise, the physical nature of the strut changes throughout most of my drives. I can be sitting at a stop light and my car will all of the sudden drop in the rear, as if the strut got stuck in the up position when the car was coming to a stop. Sometimes just one settles, sometimes it's both. Correct me if I am wrong but this sounds like a defect or bad design and SHOULD be replaced.
