I've been to the stealership twice and the deaf bastards can't find the noise. I gave up so I now crank up the volume and roll out.

If you heard this clunk, you'd know it was the strut doing it, right?

My STi makes all sorts of creaks and clunks all the time, I don't know where half of them come from.

I drive at least one a day. All from, barely any noise to it sounds like the strut is about to come through the back seat.

Sometimes just one settles, sometimes it's both. Correct me if I am wrong but this sounds like a defect or bad design and SHOULD be replaced.
How can it get stuck in the up position? your right, it is a bad design but, it cant be fixed. if you get the struts replaced the noise will come back. why fight the dealer, just get coilovers and be done with it.

if I knew, i'd be designing and selling them!

the reason i'd rather take it to the dealership is because they *should* replace them free of charge and allow me to go hopefully another 20k miles problem free. buying coilovers causes ME to spend $2k to fix something I shouldn't have to. and since I don't have the time to fuss around with setting the coilovers, getting ANOTHER alignment, etc., the value just doesn't outweigh the troubles.

I had both my rear struts on my '04 STi replaced twice and I would have kept having Subaru replace them until my warranty ran out if I had kept the car. Nobody should have to deal with that stinking problem. Everytime I drove my car with the strut clunk it made me feel like my beloved car was junk.

Everyone please check your axle nuts. These are known to be a bit loose from the factory and product a pronounced CLUNK when changing driving direction. Many so-called strut failures are really simply loose axle nuts.

A search will give you all the info you need.

Which is the axle nut and how tight should it be?

I have the bulletin if anyone wants it. and id doesn't say anything about loose axle nuts. it says the axle is rotating back and forth in the hub when changing directions. certain Ferrari's have the same issue. and the bulletin only applies for 08' model year Impreza's. there is even a vin range.

my next question is should I have put my stock springs back on before taking it in to be looked at? I have prodrives on there now, so they'll know they aren't stock, but would it be less of a hassle to get them replaced if they see stock springs?

What about my WL sway bars?

I would change the springs back. if they see the springs it will give them an immediate excuse to not warranty the struts. The sway bars should not make a difference but, it depends on the dealer you take it too.
