Question > $900 for 60k service?

I was at the dealer today for my STi's regular oil-change and whatnot, and asked about the 60k service.

I was quoted over $900! It includes changing all fluids (trans, diffs, etc), the spark plugs, and also (this one surprised me) the timing belt.

Does this sound about right? It sound a little high to me...

you can do everything but the timing belt easily on your own.

I am assuming the belt & belt labor is $300. You can do the rest for about $100, So why not get dirty and save $500?

That's actually pretty close to what I was thinking it would be. At the dealership I work at, they charge around a grand for a 60k service on an AWD vehicle.

That is outrageous.

We charge under 600 for a 60k and we change all fluids except power steering and rear differential, oil change, rotate/balance tires, plugs, adjust parking brake, new filters, etc.

Timing belt isn't due until 105k.

our 60k at toyota is half that price, but toyota recommends the tbelt be changed at 90k on the new cars and 60 on the older ones.

Yea I was quoted around $800. All I need them to do is the timing belt cuz I absolutely hate doing timing belts! The rest has been done in the last month. Changed out everything by myself. If you're not too mechanically inclined you can find some good How-To's on here.

Actually, that is irrelevant being that each dealer does different things for their service and Toyota's service isn't Subaru.

but as a tech, labor rates are usually around 80-90 dollars, with most fluids being around the same price. thats why i gave him my opinion on what i do on a daily bases. sorry if it wasnt to your liking.

If the Hyundai has 60k on it isn't $1,2000 more than the car's worth? Even if it's not that's got to be around 1/3 of its street value.

Anyone done a timing belt on their STI? It can't be that bad, you just have to take about every other thing off the front of the engine to get to it.

ive never done a tbelt on a sti.. but i have on a forester, which had the NA motor. it was a biotch in a way that when your putting the belt on the cams tend to move, and since it has 4 cams, it makes you pull your hair out. definatly not something for the novice. if you have a friend that has knowledge, have them help because tbelts installed wrong can cause alot of problems, especially if your motor is a interference one.
