"all the way to the back position" is not lock, it's open.

You car should rarely make noises while in open mode. If it was locked, now thats a whole other story.

umm, you might want to look at your dash again. The one below auto is lock.

Do you have a warning light flashing ? No then this sounds like normal behavior for the condition because you lock the rear axle in this position and therfore are scrubbing the tires and binding the axles on pavement. When you select auto position it should steer freely this normal

Not a problem. Took my car to the dealer for the same thing when it was 1month old. Took the tech guy in the car and did it and he told me normal. Hard to believe something like this is normal but once you understand why its pretty understandable. This is what the tech guy told me "when the diff is locked and the wheel is straight the car runs fine but if u turn the wheel all the way and try to move forward the car feels like its stuck so u give it extra gas and then you hear a click, this is because when the wheel is turned and your trying to make a circle, the outside wheel has to turn faster than the inside wheel because the outside wheel is traveling a farther distance. On snow or ice it is not a problem. Just keep it in auto unless your rallying. Thats what I do anyway.

so your locking your center diff....and wonder why the car doesnt like to turn? Are you serious? You do realize that locking your center diff will only allow the front/rear wheels to spin at exactly the same rate....obviously this will be noticed when turning b/c its not going to happen on dry pavement...what you are experiencing is your driveline binding up on you (aka not good).

On a side note....i would not mess with your center diff positions if you dont know how its going to directly relate to how your driveline is going to operate. Driving around in "locked" while on dry pavement is going to put very unecessary wear and tear on your center diff.

this is a funny one. My friend was asking me a question about my car and it was about the center diff. Apparently his friend has a sti also and took it to the track and was running the car in full rear. when he brought the car home he was playing with the center diff and found the same noises so he thought he ruined the center diff at the track. He didnt want to take it to the dealer because he thought they would blame it on him and he would have to pay for it, So what did he do? He sold the car. lol My buddy told his friend that there was nothin wrong with the car and that it was normal and I'm guessing he felt like an idiot. lol

I don't think a locked center diff forces the wheels to turn at the same speed. I'm pretty sure that it just locks the torque split between the front and rear. Our front and rear differentials are still open and compensate for turning. If I'm wrong here please correct me...
