Angry End link broke, sway bar flipped, denied warranty

2005 STi
Original suspension

Driver side end link broke, swaybar was not in it's correct position on inspection, it was flipped down. Passenger side end link bent like a f'n V.

I was denied warranty because "the sway bar was removed and installed incorrectly. There's no way it could have flipped on its own without breaking both end links."

My response was "one end link broke, and that could have been what caused the sway bar to flip. which is what caused so much marring and damage to the end links."

His response was "there's no way i can prove you didn't remove the swaybar and install it incorrectly. which is what someone did. no warranty for you, sir."

I'm having him put this in writing, and i think i'm going to take it to carmax to try to battle with them on replacing it.

I need advice on how to get this covered (be it by carmax or subaru). It's $500 ish including diagnostic fees to have the dealer fix it. it's $200 in parts for the lateral links. This is not my fault.

Help!

If you really want OE equipment they have to prove you did do something to create the problem, not the other way around. Call SOA and be persistant. IMO, though, this is a perfect excuse to get a nice whiteline rear bar and endlinks. Hell you could get F&R WL bars and rear endlinks for less than the dealer cost to replace the rear.

not covering because they said someone took the bar off and installed incorrectly. while that WAS NOT me, i can't prove that. I think I agree with them, that it was installed incorrectly. I can't really see how the bar could flip without breaking both end links.

I tried the argument that one broke through manf defect, and sufficient torque could have flipped it.

Yeah, you're right but it's the lateral links that are damaged. I have kartboys on the way, keeping the stocker rear for now, but those lateral links are chewed up man. On the bright side, they didn't find any cracks in them.

But still, if any of you are really good arguers please give me some ammo to go to carmax / soa with

Nothing was wrong, the rear swaybar CAN flip. They cannot prove someone installed it wrong, that is rediculous they would even say that. Why would it have been of fthe car if its is all OEM parts? Just say if it was indeed installed wrong then it must have been the factory that installed it wrong! Don't let them eff you over.

Just remember the burden of proof is on them. Swaybars do flip...

yes, lackskill, but my lat link is slightly more damaged that theirs is. (i'm referring to the 2nd thread) I actually saw this thread, but it's difficult to say "i saw it on the internet" and not sound like i'm 16 and whining. or maybe it's because i suck at debate. moot point.

dealership said they've never seen / hear of one flipping. that it was installed incorrecly. i have to pay $85 for them to say this to me. dammit, i'm so irate right now.

If you print off the threads and take them in, its a little difficult for them to say it doesnt happen. They are trying to screw you, call the SOA rep. The dealership cannot deny warrany claims, that has to happen at SOA. If SOA says it can be warrantied, then the dealer will do what they are told. Do let the dealer assholes be the ones in power and dont take no for an answer. You could also try calling SOA and then going to a different dealer. Sounds like this dealer has a bug up their ass.

EDIT: There are probably more threads about this on www.nasioc.com and www.i-club.com or any of the other impreza forums.

I would do all of that, but still take it back to the same dealer to rub it in their face when SOA makes them fix it. As said before Subaru has the burden of proof here.

It seems to have happened to a lot of people. I'm curious, if any of you come across this thread, and you've had this resolved, please post a case number so the rest of us will have some ammo when we call SOA. Maybe eventually we'll get a recall.
