Default Eratic Fuel Gauge Reading

I own a 2005 STi and recently noticed that whenever I fill the fuel tank up the fuel gauge no longer reads "FULL". It goes to about half way between the full mark and the 1/4 used mark. The car just turned 40,000 miles. Anyone have any ideas. I was hoping to save a trip to the dealer.

Scott

My gauge is heading in the same direction. '05 also. I'm thinking the float is, uhm, sinking...

I have an 06 and about 19,500 miles. My last 2 fill ups I have tried to get it to the "Full" mark. I kept filling little by little until it began to overflow just a hint. Still the guage reads between full and 3/4 tank. I have never actually been able to fill my tank to the "Full" marker, so I think it is a common problem. My mileage hasnt changed though.

I thought that this was a known issue? Fuel sensor or the float or something like that?
