IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2004 Trader Rating: (0) | I really hate to post this, but I went to pick up some oil filters at Pitre Subaru today, and the service manager told me I should not change my oil until 3000 because of "break in oil". This sounds like BS to me, but its not outside of the realm of possibilities that there is such a thing as break in oil in our cars. Though the manual says nothing about it. I have 370 miles on my 07 (in the last 4 days), and was planning on changing my oil a few times before 1000, and every 2500 or so after that. I am using dino oil. I have read pretty much all the break in threads, but the only one that I found that dispelled the rumor of break in oil was this one. First Oil Change So is break in oil BS or not. I thought I should post here before I change it, though it seems many people do change oil before 1000. I say BS, but I would like to hear what more educated individuals think. IWSTI Addict since: Jan 2006 Trader Rating: (1) | Some engine builders used to break in motors on something like 30w before switching to multi viscosity or synthetic. Follow the manual. I like to change between 500-1000 miles for the first change. This is just a precaution to help remove any assymbly debris. (Machining dust/shavings, gasket material or sealers. ETC) From then on anything between 2000- 3000(depending on use) should be fine. |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 1969 Trader Rating: (11) | I changed my oil around 800 I think, then at 2500. I went synthetic at 5k, but most of those miles were track miles. Had it been regular driving I would have probably done synthetic at 7500 or 10k. Honestly, it doesn't matter that much. I remember I was running about 3/4 of a quart low on oil at one track day around 2k miles and I put in some 5w40 Shell Helix Ultra Synthetic (Ferrari racing oil), so for about 500 miles I had a mix of dino oil and synthetic LOL. The car ran fine, no harm at all, and I've never burned more than a half quart since. Now I change my oil every 800 to 1000 miles, along with my O2 sensors every 15 to 20 tanks (1500 to 2000 miles). Gotta love leaded gas...lol ![]() So far I've tried: Motul 0w40 Redline 5w40 Mobil 1 10w40 Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 They were all good, I'm using the shell right now, but I liked the motul as well.
