Unhappy 30k Service?!

Man, I just scheduled one of these and was quoted $380 without the plug replacement(just had new plugs put in it recently). This seems high to me. I do my own oil changes and tire rotations so I could have them leave that part off I guess. Is this normal?

My dealer (in CA) charges $525 (plugs not included; I think they're good until 60K). I told them not to do the oil/tire rotation/air filter and got it dropped to $400.

i think you, personally, can do most of the stuff in that service.

what exactly are they going to do for you?

I loved doing my 30K on my ol' 02 WRX. Really brings you closer to the vehicle. Learned a few things while I was at it too.

Do it yourself if you've got the tools and time.

I wanted to do it myself really, but my service advisor (guy that actually sold me the car when he was a salesman there - he and I are pretty good friends) told me that Subaru has problems with honoring warranty issues when some services aren't performed by a verifiable source, aka a dealership. I believe him - hes never jerked me around before. I pulled an idiot and forgot to bring my wheel lug lock with me when I went over there to get the service done so the brake portion was mostly untouched which really sucks because my pads are next to gone. I can't decide if I want to try to get them replaced under the 3yr/36k warranty or just buy some aftermarket pads at this point. The stock pads perform just fine for me and how I use the car - but I could sure use less dusting.

Get them replaced, then sell them here. Replace them yourself with your choice of pads.

Also- most of us have destroyed out warranty so throughly, that it doesn't matter at this point if they know when service was done. Your sig makes it look like you have done a good job of voiding most of your engine and suspension warranty. What have you to lose?

I see what you're saying but the dealership that I deal with is pretty mod friendly. They aren't going to void my entire warranty because I have lowering springs. I have done a good bit of modding, but I do not abuse my car and they know it. Kinda have to play both sides I suppose. Anyhow, you've given me some things to consider, so thanks for your input!

if you noticed, i did not say void your entire warranty, but if you change things, the dealership can easily say that caused a problem. maybe you have a nice dealer, one who will kinda turn a blind eye to the mod, but there are many that (i hear) will not.

one thing to consider- if they don't see problems with mods, maybe you should have them do your service, so that when something breaks that was modified, they will be more likely to help you out since you helped them out.

if you have receipts and proof that you did the service yourself, then you are fine, dealerships and car companies cannot entrap you into going to them, those things are just said to bring the dealerships the dough$$$$, because thats really where they make their money.

I am pretty loyal to this particular dealership. It's 60 miles (1 way) out of my way over the mountains on the TN/NC line. They have always been good to me whether is was service related or sale related. They have their own in-house performance division so I am confident that as long as I keep them happy with service and referrals, they will do what they can to keep everything on the level for me.

I have every receipt for everything I've bought for the car, even oil from Auto Zone (I'm OCD like that, unfortunately) and I log everything I do or have done to the car on my.subaru.com. I believe I have a reliable record of everything thats been done to the car to quell any possible suspicions if the time were to come that I need warranty work done. The dealership actually makes more money off of warrnanty paid work than customer paid work, and by a fairly sizable amount.
