Default Calling all Subaru Guru's !!!

Hi guys, I have an 05 STi with turboxs turboback exhaust, APS cold air intake system, and cobb AP w/ custom tune from XX Tuning. The car has around 12,450 miles on it and Im noticing a strange noise coming from the engine bay, this noise sounds like a rattling piece of metal, and only coming on when I am off the throttle in any gear. I got scared so I checked the oil and there was barely anything on the dipstick so i put about a 1 1/2 quarts of Mobile 1 in and It still is making this noise.. im thinking of taking it to the stealership tommarrow to get it checked out by them.. PLZ any help on this would be great,

Thanks!

Possibly a heat shield ratteling around. take the heatshield over the turbo off and see if thatmake it stop. it might need to be trimmed some more.

First of all, when was the last time you checked/changed your oil?!?! The fact that you had almost no oil in your engine for an unknown amount of time is not a good sign. The rattling is probably not something loose, you normally wouldn't hear it only off throttle (your engine/car moves a lot more on throttle) or inside the car with all the windows up for that matter if it were a heat shield or something. I smell part(s) failure. Unfortunately if i were you, i would look forward to a major engine oil haul/ engine failure in your near future (see SOA raping you). Then again if i were you, i would have to punch myself in the nuts for not performing routine maintenance checks on my car. Adding 1 1/2 quarts of oil is not enough considering there was barely any oil on the dipstick. Have you even looked for any oil leaks? Pay to play, this isn't a commuter car and should not be treated thusly. /rant

Get one or trim the stock on to fit, your underhood/intercooler temps are now higher because of a lack of heat shielding and your performance is suffering. They don't put these things on for no reason.

you need to have someone who actually knows what they are listening to confirm the origin of the sound. i would not start with the dealer.

if you determine there is a major part or catastrophic failure, given the few mods you have on it, i would throw on the stock intake and downpipe and upload the stock map. whatever you do, make sure you do that. if they reflash your ecu you will end up with a 600. paperweight if you don't.

I fully understand that this car is supposed to be maintainted and checked often, I have not noticed any oil leakage going on. I had my oil changed at 10,100 miles and it is now at 12,475... if this car is not made to be a commuter car then half the people on this forum would not own it. i do take responsibilty for not checking the oil and hopefully It is not any sort of engine failure , I will keep you guys updated after I see the service guys at Subaru.

I get a slight metallic rattle in 5th-6th when off-throttle. It's very faint and comes from the passenger side of the engine bay...heck it could even be coming from the shifter.

Is the sound loud, muffled/quiet, consistent, etc. More details would be good...

its not to loud, I have a the RFL-Ti exhaust so i really have to dip my head closer to the passenger side to really hear it but i do hear a metallic sound of metal coming from the engine bay, I went to the stealership and was told the F-U for having the mods that I did on my car, lol.
