Angry Dealership refused to replace IC throttle body hose

Irvine Subaru refused to replace my Intercooler throttle body hose because they said that since I had an aftermarket boost gauge installed, it voids the warranty. I have noticed that my hose was loose before the gauge install. The clamps for the hose even started to tear the hose. I don't even think the guy who installed my boost gauge even removed the intercooler to install my gauge. Even if he did, how would this cause a tear in the hose?

And what really made me mad is that they wanted to charge me a $90 inspection charge! I started yelling at them so they waived this fee. My 04 STi only has 19k miles on it. Should I try going to another dealership to get this hose replaced?

I just called South Coast Subaru because they have a more "mod-friendly" reputation. But they did say that they have a $90 diagnostic fee as well if they find that this is not covered under warranty. Now I am afraid to bring it in because I fear that they will charge me $90 for nothing.

I find it rediculous that a small piece of rubber can cause so much trouble (no pun intended).

Just hide your aftermarket boost gauge for the time being, then take it in.

Thanks for the offer! I might take you up on it. So how is the STi red rubber hose working out for you? Where did you buy it and how much?

It's higher quality silicone, no issues. It's a $47.00 part though. Undeniable bling factor because it has the STI lettering

This is a very old pic when my engine was all stock

There's no reason to remove the IC to install a boost gauge, except maybe to get different access to the firewall for running the hose. To normally install, you just tee into the line coming off the BPV. That sounds like a stretch to deny a claim for that.

silicone couplers for much cheaper:

BTW, I would call SOA and complain about this BS $90 fee you keep hearing about when you clearly have a warranty issue.

I'm afraid not as I have not had to replace mine yet. I know a couple folks have used these though so a quick search may get you the size.

Just to let everyone with an 04 know, Subaru changed that hose in 05. I noticed it one day at a meet when I was checking out an 05. My i/c was always separating from the t/b during hard shifting probably due to the TEC 20G, I bought the new hose from the dealer and problem solved. The new hose has a nice little lip on each end so the clamps won't slip off. The new hose and some t-bolt clamps keeps everything nice and secure .

They must have changed this hose mid model year. My 05 doesn't have the lips on it. The TB-side clamp has already come off on me once.

Just wave the Magnuson-Moss act in their faces. In order to deny warranty coverage, they need to prove that the boost gauge caused the failure of the hose.
