Default Warranty denied due to accident

I was just wondering if dealerships are right in denying one's warranty due to an accident. My friend's WRX was involved in some minor accident, which consisted of just minor cosmetic damage (like painting the front bumper). A few weeks later after getting his car fixed, his 'check engine' light came on. He took his car to the dealership and was asked if his car was involved in an accident. He replied yes, and they denied his warranty claim. I am wondering if the dealership can do this? Sure he got into an accident, but how does body work make the engine light come on?

if it is denied by the dealership because of the accident then the insurance company should pay for it.

They can if a connection between the accident and what caused the CEL is made. Tell your budy to follow normansti's advice, and call the insurance company.

But thats assuming that the current check engine light has any relation to the repairs and/or the actual accident right? If there isnt any relationship between the two, meaning the accident/repairs didnt cause the check engine light to come on, then the dealer should honor the warranty right?

doesn't the dealer have to show specifically that the accident caused the check engine light?

Tell him to go to autozone and get the code pulled so we at least know what it is.
It could be something totally nonrelated, and easy to fix on his own. Like a loose gas cap. In which case you give it an extra click and clear the code.

if its not coverered by the dealership then it should be covered by the insurance company or vice versa. One of the two have to cover it.

This is what you pay your insurance premiums for. Have the insurance company contact the dealership (via its lawyers) and request proof that it is an accident related problem.

I have seen way too many posts about warranty claims being denied for stupid a$$ reasons. I understand the whole concept of BIG turbo = no engine warranty, but come on. Where is the dealership coming from in this case? Do dealerships have some financial incentive from Subaru based on limiting warranty work?

Yea, the reason you see so many warranty claims being denied is Subarus inability to manage it's company in a honest way, instead they try fix their products. Bad Business practices. -10 for Subaru
