So I got my car back last night. They replaced 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th gears plus all of the syncros and bearings in between! I mean I know I had a syncro problem but damn! Came out to over $5000 in parts and labor. Best $2000 I've ever spent (for the extended warranty)!!!!!

I'm actually kind of glad the trans broke, cuz now it shifts better than it ever did. It slides into gear sooo smooth its orgasmic. And it only cost $100 (deductible)

Default Re: Speed-Shift "grind" from 4th to 5th gear

Here is the issue I'm having. I have the dreaded 4-5 grind at 6000-6500 rpm, and also a 5-4 downshift grind (at any speed over 90 km/h (roughly 55 mph)) even when shifting very slowly. I took it to the dealer today and they had their head tech take it for a drive with me in the car. He was able to duplicate the 5-4 downshift grind but not 4-5 because he couldn't get it past 5000 rpm. However, he said he would take my word on the 4-5 upshift.

He said he has never worked on a 6MT and they just get sent back to Toronto and a new tranny gets sent in it's place.

Now, here is where things get irritating. I get the standard BS about how I modded my car. The service manager is bringing up the fact that I have aftermarket seats in the car (how the hell do seats affect the tranny???). I told him I have an exhaust system and an aftermarket clutch. Obviously, I've done a lot of lightening to the car but they are not aftermarket parts. The only other drivetrain mod is the ACPT CF driveshaft which I didn't tell them about (completely forgot to be honest).

Basically, the dealer wants me to sign a waiver saying that I will be responsible for all the repairs and shipping if they send my tranny back to Subaru and they determine that it is abuse (which I'm confident it is not). It just irritates me because the way the manager said it, it could be "thousands of dollars" to try to scare me from going ahead with the warranty work. He said I would be responsible for paying for a complete tranny re and re, complete tranny tear down, plus shipping to and from Subaru Canada.

I used to have an 02 WRX with an ACT clutch, and this same dealer installed that clutch into my WRX and also did not deny warranty based on that clutch. They made me sign a similar waiver and I was ok with that (the re and re) but this one is WAY out of line since it involves sending the tranny back to Toronto, TEAR apart of the tranny, etc.)... the WRX one was only RE and RE of the tranny so the risk factor was way less. The only diff. in this case is the exhaust system (irrelevant) and the ACPT driveshaft (irrelevant but potentially something they could nitpick).

The tech seems to think it should be ok and it's the synchro that is bad.

The service manager is going to get the head Subaru service manager in tommorow and then give me a call to let me know what's up.

How do you guys (especially the guys in Canada) suggest I deal with this?

That's a standard practice actually. I had to sign off on a tear down before they would even consider warranty. Then once they determine it is not abuse then they will finish their work. I'm not sure how it works in Canada, but they rebuilt my trans and the service writer said they didn't have a choice and that SOA said they needed to rebuild it. The master tech at the stealership I go to admitted that he's never taken one apart and he called the other 2 stealerships in the area and no one there had done it either.

Ok so i know im new here, but not the world of forums or steelerships. I worked for one for about 5 years in the warranty dept. and i got news for you they can play smoke and mirror's all day. i knew reps that would pass anything under warranty no matter what it just depends on who know's who and if the sevice manager is in a good mood..lol..back on topic my car is having these same issues. i took it in and they told me they had never heard of the issue. So i showed them the first 2 threads of many on here and he just stoped talking...haha..then told me that i needed the $800..luckly i have a connection at the dealership and got them to hold off on that...turns out it was a syncro issue and they are replacing 3rd 4th and 5th gears and syncros under warranty...haha..guess i got lucky since he had never heard of the problem before..<"joke" i dont know why subaru dosent just post a bullitin about this knid of $#!t so we dont have to fight with people just to not get ripped off....rant done

im a horrible speller and never follow writing rules...sorry if its hard to read

What's the powetrain warranty length on the 04's?

That should be covered under p/t after the bumper to bumper expires...

You're out of 3 year/ 36K manufacturer warranty. Do you have an extended warranty?

Power train is 60k. I have 50k on my 05 and it's going in on Monday for a 3rd to 4th grind. Got the normal "we need to take it apart to see if SOA will cover it".

So i guess sometime over the next two weeks I'll know if I'm trading in the 05 for an 08 or not
