I am having a similar issue but in reverse. I have a grind when droping from 5th to 4th. Only when i am getting on it though. Normal driving is pretty much fine.

Also if I hit 1st to second hard I get a good gring. Anybody have similar issues??

I want to get dealer to look at the issue but I just hit 30K and they are trying to get me to do a 30K service for $599. So I think they would say get the service and it will fix the issue.

What does anybody think?

In this case the service might actually help because the 30k should include flushing and replacing of the transmission fluid. If you drive your car hard and force it into the gears, eventually the synchros will wear out.

If you are downshifting, you can double-clutch rev-match in order to alleviate some wear on your synchros. Eventually, if your synchros are completely shot, this becomes a requirement instead of an option.

When you are upshifting, there's nothing you can really do to help it if you bang the gears in at higher revs, hence the expression "you gotta pay to play".

I am actually having a grind from 1st to 2nd when I took my car to the track yesterday. Only when I was racing it on the track I got the grind from 1st to 2nd, it happened 5 times and then I was done. Am I screwed, is my gear box messed up?

P.S. Normal driving is fine, no problems....

Default Re: Speed-Shift "grind" from 4th to 5th gear

I'm having the same problem. My 3rd to 4th is grinding and so is my 4th to 5th. But I have a pretty unique situation....

I'm the second owner of the car. When I bought the car I bought the 100K mile extended warranty. So I went to have my rear struts replaced, and they got a flag on the warranty, "This vehicle has had previous warranty claims denied due to abuse/modifications". So they looked up what was denied...... The previous owner snapped both rear axles, and shredded both the front and rear diff!!!

Soooooo, now I have the syncro grind. The tech took my car out for a spin the other day and confirmed that the syncros are grinding and even admitted that it's a common problem. So I go home for the day cuz I took it in at 6:30 and he said he would have to contact Subaru in the morning for the warranty info. So I told him he was going to get a flag on the warranty but it was from the previous owner. I was talking with him about it and he said I shouldn't be held accountable for what the previous owner did to the car, especially since the warranty was sold to me after the damage was done.

So he called SOA, and some a-hole told him that they have to tear the trans apart before they can warranty anything because of the previous abuse. I have no choice according to SOA. So I called the warranty dept and actually got to talk to the guy who said it, and he kept feeding me a bunch of corporate BS. I just got mad and said fine. I made an appointment for next week.

I'm not too worried about it tho, because either SOA or the dealership itself is going to cover it. If SOA denies the warranty, then they should not have approved the warranty purchase in the first place, and are now guilty of Breach of Contract, as well as the dealership. I have absolutely no problem getting a lawyer involved because I have use of the corporate lawyers at my job (I work for a bank). I don't want it to come to that, and I doubt it will.... but you never know!

With my 04 STi that I barely drive, I sometime experience the 5th gear issue that is described here, but I think it's perhaps due to being too "clutch happy" and not putting the clutch all the way in/shifting too fast.

It happens rarely.

Don't think I'm going to sweat it too much.

Anyone else?

Just took my car in last Friday for this problem (5th and 6th grind). They said they'll have it for a week. I have DP and catback (Cobb too, but flashed to stock) so hopefully they don't give me crap about the warranty (45k miles). When I asked the service manager if he'd seen this before, he said he'd only ever seen one trans problem on an STi (but I don't think they service too many). I'll update when I hear from the dealer.

*edit*
I should also add that I originally thought that I was shifting too fast and not pushing the clutch in the whole way and then I thought it may be due to some of the shoes I wear (sandals, dress shoes, etc...). It started doing almost every time I would pull away from a toll-booth accelerating up to 70 (give or take) and I noticed that if I let the revs come down while holding the shifter right at the gate for 5th it would slide in smoothly when they got to the right point. Without letting the revs come down, if I just forced it into 5th (and 6th) I would get a nasty grind.

Additional note: This sh*ty rental car is killing me (as-base-as-it-comes Mitsu Lancer).

So I have my car at the stealership now, I took it in yesterday morning. I get a call from the Service Writer and he says that the tech can't get it to grind but I'm more than welcome to come in and see if I can get it to do it. So I get there and ask the tech how hard he drove it, and he didn't get it over 50mph. I even told them on the phone that it has to be up in a high rpm in 4th to grind. So I take him out and run out 4th gear and shifted into 5th, and low and behold, it ground just like I said it would.

It wasn't all of that that got me a little nervous tho, it was the conversation that I had with the tech while I was in the car with him. He told me that not even one tech in a 75 mile radius has even taken an STi trans apart before and he's not sure how to do it! And this guy is the Master Tech at the place! So I have a feeling it's gonna be in there for a while...

Well, I got my car back but haven't got a chance to see if the grind's gone yet. The notes on the sheet from the dealer said "couldn't reproduce" and the manager told me that they changed the trans fluid because it was "really thin" and tightened something to do with the clutch or the linkage and that he didn't notice any grinding after that (even though they didn't notice it to start with). Anyway, it was all covered under warranty (~$260) despite my DP and exhaust but I'm still not convinced that the problem is gone.

You should have taken them out in the car and proved it did it. Thats what I had to do cuz the tech said he couldn't get it to do it when he drove it
