I have heard of people using Synchromesh instead and that helped the issue.

I'm surprised that they agreed to open up your transmission for warranty work with the short shifter on it.

I read your first post (before it was edited) and I agree for most things. If something breaks on my car because of a mod, I wouldn't try to hide it from the dealership as long as they were reasonable (i.e. didn't try to void my engine warranty because of endlinks or some crap. )

If it was the STi short shifter that would be different, but it is a Kartboy, so theoretically they could give you a hard time. Not that I totally agree with it, but the a short shifter can exaggerate synchro issues.

I edited it because I realized the guy I was quoting was not the OP and thought maybe I overreacted... My mistake!

Still, if I was a service manager and somebody brought their car in with an aftermarket short shifter and complained about syncro problems... I'd probably have a good laugh and explain why it probably wouldn't be covered under warranty.

Granted... Subaru sells a "factory" short shifter, but that doesn't necessarily mean they should be held responsible for damage caused by any and all aftermarket short shifters.

More often than not, syncro issues are caused by the driver, and not by a defect in the vehicle. Every single car I have ever owned and been a part of a specific web forum for, people have complained about syncro issues. I am not convinced that every single one of them actually had a problem with their equipment. Some of them might have, but I'd bet most of their problems could have been solved by fixing their right arm.

update: screw concordville subaru! dropped my car off there 8am this morning.. waited around all freaking day for them to look at it (yes, i had a morning appointment).. finally around 1:30 i see the young tech pull my car back into the garage. new service manager, shane, tells me that any after market mod automatically voids any warranty. so i showed him my copy of the federal law stating that it must be proven that the aftermarket parts are directly the cause of the synchro failure... then he made a few calls and then told me that i needed to bring my car back in (an hour away from my house) monday and leave it there for 2 days for them to take apart the tranny.. oh yeah.. and i gotta give them an $800 deposit. the main suby rep guy is supposed to then come in and inspect the open trans and then he decidedes if the tranny has been beaten on or if the synchro has prematurely worn/broke becuase of the ****ty 04-05 6sp syncros. so im assuming he
s just gonna say its my fault and ill have to let them keep the $800 to put the tranny back in and im out lotsa gas money and days w/o my sti!!!!!!!!! damn im frustrated.. i have a new car with a warranty for a reason. last summer..with the same mods.. i got front BRAKES covered! i started talking to the tech that 'test drove' my car and he said they might or might not cover it. this is a bunch of crap. sorry i needed to vent.....

mods: catless tbe, k&n typhoon, spt short shifter, (& i unmarried the ap)

The problem is how does one know what a synchro looks like from abuse due to power mods? I don't know how that would exactly work - is this rep a drivetrain expert?

Honestly, I would tell them that a deposit isn't necessary. Seriously, your transmission is going to be out of the car, what do they think you're going to do, pull a Fred Flintstone?

I would seriously consider taking your problem to another dealership. I wouldn't want any pissed off mechanics workings on my 6spd tranny.

If you're thinking about finding another dealership to work on your car, find one that is comfortable with working on the 6mt. Every dealership should have a tech trained in how to work on it, but some dealerships and techs are more comfortable with it than others. You want to find one that's comfortable with it, and I personally would even drive a bit to get my car there.
