Saw this post on NASIOC. May this be the cause?

Quote:
The USDM 6-speed transmission was compromised by stringent US regulations for cruising fuel efficiency. Sacrificed was the close ratio gearing of the JDM 5th and 6th gears. This kit includes shorter 5th and 6th gears to convert your taller USDM 6-Speed Transmission to a true close ratio JDM STi spec gear box; the way it was designed to be. This conversion will be particularly useful for those of you who regularly track or drag race your car. As I'm sure you've noticed, their is a large space in gear ratios between 4th and 5th gears on the USDM 6spd. This oftentimes causes a grinding when shifting from 4 to 5 quickly because the synchros cannot catch up quickly enough to compensate for the large difference between gear ratios.

I've been told that it is likely caused by a broken syncro, but the reason it broke is because of the long jump in gearing.

Hey guys.. I got my car back from subaru with all the synchros changed and covered under warranty at Metric Subaru... everything feels fine but what I thought was grinding is somewhat still there. After screwing around with a kartboy SS this week.. NOW... I THINK.. that what i thought was grinding was actually the reverse lock out wire shaking the little slider against the stick itself causing a rattle which sounds like a grind... this is my assumption cuz Metric told me my synchros almost had no wear after 23k miles.... so hoping this helps anyone

from what i've heard/ experienced, the 4-5 grind usually only occurs when speed shifting at 90 mph or so.... the dealership won't be able to legally "duplicate" the problem.... has anyone actually been successful in getting a dealership to fix this problem under warranty?

it sounds like you did it suren27, but they had to take a look at your tranny because you had an obvious 1-2 grind...

yep, well you know what, they took the synchros out and said my synchros were fine after 23k miles but they went ahead and replaced them anyways... i think this speed shift is not really a grind but the reverse lock out being thrown all the way to the right and vibrating the ring against the stick... sigh if youve taken your shifter apart to install a kartboy or something youd realize and understand what im talking about

I have a catback and intake for mods and, i had the 4th to 5th grind problem. i could also duplicate the problem going from 3rd to 5th. I got the whole speach about abuse and it there was any found it wouldnt be covered. I think they do that as a scare tatic for those who have really beat the crap out of their cars. I walked in and told them i wanted to meet the tech that would be doing the work and i wanted to take the tech out for a drive to show him what was happening. They said ok surprisingly. tookd the tech for the ride and hes like that sounds like a syncro problem. he asked me if i had any mods, so i told him. He then was like well subaru doesnt like us to do anything that has non-subaru aftermarket parts, but as long as there is no sign of abuse there shouldnt be any problems. I just said thats fine but i know you wont find any abuse. It took them 2 weeks but they fixed it under warrenty. That was at 33000 miles.

Are you referring to the Subaru dealer right outside of West Chester? If you're that close, I'll suggest the Subaru dealership in Wilmington, Delaware right on Pennsylvania Avenue. Sorry, I don't know the name of it. I've never dealt with their service department, but their sales staff was quite friendly. I got a good impression of them. Check their service department.

Man subaru and their warranties. its hard to argue for or against it. I know in my case had the dealership just spoken to me in a more polite manner i would have been very understanding. But its the whole "we cant fix ure car...so buzz off" attitude which pisses me off.

I hear ya there. That's BS. What really irritates me is that I've heard that Subaru's customer service satisfaction rating was quite high, and that was just another determining factor that steered me towards a Subaru. Then, I join a few forums, and I don't hear many positive things about their customer service here in the States. Apparently overseas, Subaru is ranked #1 in customer service satisfaction. Their good customer service is another thing they should "import" to the States, I guess.

Has anyone had the sync problem with an 07? The longer 4th should help avoid this should it not? Just a thought.
