Default NJ, Diffrent dealers give diffrent answers on exhaust and warranty voiding

Im from NJ eastern NJ...I talk to this kid who has a TBE and i said i wanted to get one myself but didnt want my warranty voided...he told me that his dealership didnt care about exhausts and that it wont void your warranty so he got one...i asked my dealer today and they acted as if i asked if i could drop a viper engine in the car with nitro and the whole shabang if that would void my warranty...they said ummmm maybe from the catback...but if you start messing with the cats they probably wont like that...i told them about the other dealer and they still acted like i had three heads coulnt get a straight answer...i know the dealer the kid is talking about its only like 10 miles away...so they know who im tlaking about to...could dealers that close to each other have such difffrent outlooks on things why are they being such weirdos...anyway the service guy told me he'd check and leave me a message...what do you guys think about this

I live right near you, where did you get yours? I got mine at World Jeep & Subaru. They said that a TBE would void my warranty, anything from the cat back was ok. But I have seen other Rex's with full TBE and lowered with a cold air getting serviced by the warranty....so I am a bit confused as well. What dealership you talking about?

Let me know what you find out. My guy at my dealer told me that: The Perrin Light Weight Pulley Wheel, TEIN coilovers, cat-back exhaust, KartBoy short throw shifter with the bushings, Rear Diff bushings, the Samco Hose kit, I beleive the Samco Turbo Inlet tube, any sway bars, strut tower braces, or anything else of that nature, any wheels/tires, Defi gauges, roll cage, harness bar, harnesses, body kits..........wow....ok....He said that was ok to do, and wouldn't void the warranty. Start messing with the turbo- no cigar, TBE-thats really pushing it to where they can easily say- no cigar, oh, Turbo XS UTEC, keep it on the low, and just remove it when you come in. Thats about it. Let me know what you find out.....

Can you please tell me what dealership you are dealing with and who your guy is? I could benefit from going to a dealership that allows those aftermarke upgrades. All of the ones that I have been to so far will not allow anything that is not OEM. I have been to World Subaru & Jeep in Shrewsbury, Oasis Subaru in Old Bridge, NJ as well as Nittis Subaru in Hamilton Square. All were extremely strict when it came to aftermarket parts voiding the warranty. It's funny to note that most of these dealerships gave me the same line while standing in the vicinity of an SPT performance upgrade poster. Does anyone know if dealerships will honor your warranty if your mods are all from SPT?

It's at the discretion of the regional subaru rep. Despite the fact that dealers (service writers) like to pretend that they interpret the warranty, they actually have nothing to do with it. As an example, if you blow a turbo and have a TBE subaru will most certainly NOT cover that under warranty. However, some underhanded dealers may give you the opportunity to swap the stock exhaust back on, or hide the TBE from the rep.

In addition, the local dealership does not have the ability to "void the warranty" on any particular part of the car for any reason. They can simply suggest to subaru that a given failure is the result of a particular aftermarket part that you may have installed. Once again, it is up to subaru (the entity you have the contract with) to determine whether or not you will be covered.

So in summary I would say cat-back = no warranty issues, TBE = probably no warranty on the engine, turbo, etc. as you are modifying the way the system works typically (more boost).

Ive been wanting to install the SPT cat back on my 05 STi. My dealer is giving me the run around and they simply said they do not want to install it. My dealer said that the SPT cat back will put the car outside of emmission standards. They also gave me the warranty story.

Interestingly the Subaru website allows you to build your car with accessories and the SPT cat back is now an official STI accessory.

What gives.

I bought my STi at the subaru dealership on Rt. 9 in Freehold. When buying the car I asked about modding and my warranty. I was told exhaust and intake were fine...though I didn't ask whether or not he was talking about from the cat back or not. He said engine management was fine, as long as it was removed prior to any servicing done to the car. I happened to ask about suspension, and he said any mod to the suspension of the car would void the warranty, and so I mentioned about using the JDM pinks and he said if it was made by subaru then it would be fine....so I don't really know about suspension. I've seen plenty of modded cars go in there for service, and I know there are plenty of mod friendly dealerships in the area as well.

That's a load of crap. A cat-back by definition is from the catalytic converter back, so it is not going to affect emissions. Not that you need any further evidence, but my car passed emissions with flying colors with the bosal twin-tip exhaust (same company that makes the SPT).

Some dealers just don't know what they are talking about. I guess if you want an official position you can email Subaru directly.

Ok on the note with suspension...if you change your suspension around, if you have any problems with the suspension, then they won't warranty it....I believe thats what they were talking about if you changed your suspension and if they would warranty it...for example: you got some Springs from XXX company.....if later on....your struts make noise and clang around...the dealership will no warranty the struts because of the aftermarket springs...if you put a whole TEIN coilover system....they obviously won't warranty that...but you changed your whole suspension system and put something else, but putting the whole TEIN coilover system won't void the warranty on the rest of the car....just like changing your headunit and it blowing the stock speakers....obviously the aftermarket headunit f'ed up your speakers, Subaru won't warranty the speakers...on the engine note.......Intake...Cat-back, Perrin Pulley, and I also heard any hoses (i.e Samco Hose Kit, and the Perrin Turbo Inlet Hose) are all ok....Engine management, a shh shhh operation, when you come to the dealership for anything......You never HAD THE engine management in there ;-) other than that...you can do anything with the interior....roll cage, Defin gauges blah blah blah...I figured with the suspension and the interior and prob a nice body kit and rims, also including some warranty friendly engine things....I can last until my warrant is over in 5 years, and then I can go crazy...hope this helps....

I could not agree more. I actually e-mailed Subaru twice over the course of a month and they have not responded to my e-mail. I have installed cat backs in 3 other cars and never had a single issue with emmissions and I live in NY.

I just think that my dealer is overly conservative and wants to avoid issues?

the guy he is talking about is me...

i bought my car from oasis subaru on 9... they do allow warranty work with TBE (catted or not) i also left in my ABC for my utec.. nothing was said... i asked whats up with that.. they said unless you physically bring the car in with the fuel/boost cut CEL still lit up, is the only way they can void your warranty...

but.. this was a while back

recently a kid brought his in there that decided to make his own boost controller and blew his engine up.. i got a call from my salesman telling me to watch out when i bring my car in with stuff.. SOA is getting shady with the warranty and what and what does not void it..

bottom line is- rip it out

before i go in out goes the
utec and switch
full TBE
ABC (from now on)
injectors
intake
front mount
the only thing i have left is my turbo (when i get it)

it usually takes a full day for me to do all these things but when i look at it, its well worth the cost of paying for broken parts and service..

and dont think the dealer/service dept is dumb either.. they werent born yesterday... they see the marks from tools on bolts, and the overlap of washers that leave marks.. for instance when i took my utec out, i put everything back to norm, but the bolt made an imprint a centimeter off from the old one... the tech turned around and said what kinda EM are you using??.. they cant do anything if its not there but dont hesitate to think they dont know

oh and by the way Oasis is one of the best dealerships i have been too in NJ so far and i have been to a lot of them.. their work is done extremely nicely (by most techs) and the Rep there.. who is a female by the way.. is extremely nice, but at the same time wont take any shlt from anyone who tries to pull a fast one.. she definitly knows her shlt

here's an excerpt from an email from Subaru.

"The only parts that are recommended by Subaru are genuine Subaru parts.
We have a Performance Parts Web site, which you can access through
Subaru.com. Most Subaru Performance Accessories are sold without warranty coverage. Though they are Subaru parts, those that affect the performance of your car are typically not warranted. With performance parts,
driver-error/driver-abuse is the most common cause of part failure. As our warranties cover defects only, it is difficult for us to provide warranty coverage for parts that are so typically damaged by abusive driving habits."

i also wanted to install the SPT catback on my car... i've read around about new car warranty (under 3k) which, according to the email, doesn't apply either. IMO if you ***** enough you can get whatever you want.

Ok, I heard a couple guys talk about OASIS Subaru on Rt.9. These guys are KNOWN CROOKS, they have MULTIPLE LAWSUITS against them and a pile of better business bureau complaints. I had to find this out the hard way, when I purchased my car they tried to sell me life insurance and not tell me about it under my nose & got pissed when I called them on it, a common car business scam (strike one), My car pulled to the left & the stearing wheel was off from day one, they told me the first time it was OK & nothing was wrong....NOOOOOOO....I fought with them, they finally confessed that they could not do an alignment because they need a special tool for the 05's & they would call me when it came in, still waiting for the call (strike 2), they had the audasity to call me a month after I purchased the car to tell me the Subaru special 2% financing cost them $600- & they wanted me to come back in & do the financing all over again, which turns out is another common car business scam! WTF!!!! (STRIKE 3!!!!!!!!!). I actually called the BBB & the District Attorney to tell my story, this is when I found out they are CROOKS.
After all this, I noticed that the paint on my hood & roof was defective, (confirmed by 2 body shops) I took it to them & they said there was nothing they could do. (how many more strikes do I need) After all this I DO NOT trust ANY of the dealers & will live with the ****ty paint, I don't want them touching my car EVER.

BOTTOM LINE..............STAY AWAY FROM OASIS!!!!!!!!!!!>>>>>>>>THEY ARE CROOK SCUMBAGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
