they r BS'ing you. Tell them you wanna talk to your regional warranty rep. Call SOA, if its making that much noise its un acceptable and should be warranty. Tons have had it replaced for noise, you can easily print those posts and show them thats its replaced under warranty. Otherwise find a different dealer.

BTW a close friend has an 04 and hers is noisy as hell as well. I will take a ride in her car one of these days...apparently 04 owners complain abt the level of discomfort a lot more than 05+

Good luck

So would new springs and struts help or hinder this problem that I am having with "clunking?"

New struts will not clunk right away, they will last a while before clunking.New springs can help if you put something progressive like prodrive, Eibach.

You could get the ever popular Ohlins struts + RCE springs RCE blacks if clearance is an issue or if you live in snowy areas. Otherwise get the RCE yellows for a nice lowered ride plus great handling. I have no direct experience with these but a lot of guys are running them and tracking them and only good things are said.

If you want for the similar price goto coilovers like RCE Tarmac2's and TiC's (AST coilover)

Other than the above options I cant really recommend anything else. Replacing something that will clunk again is pointless unless you get a smoing deal on some almost new struts. Might aswell upgrade. But be warned most struts for an STi is inverted style which have a stiction issue which is inherent of the design. When you stop the car will feel like the shcks reeased a bit. There will be some ocassional clunk but many of these upgrade parts I mentioned come with lifetime warranties so if you havent hopped a curb etc you will be able to get them rebuilt for free. Rebuilds are few and far between.

Its not chea but assuming you are a car enthusiast, this is the best opportunty to upgrade. BTW I am no expert like others on the forum but I have done tons o research and I do track/work on my car.

Goodluck

I have 13,500 miles on my 06 (driven for a little over 2.5 years) and I think I'm getting this, especially in the front left and rear right. The front left only occasionally (but when it happens it happens for the entire drive.. sounds like a series of *pops*), and the rear right is basically all the time and it sounds different but sounds like its sticking or something.

The car feels fine, so I am going to wait for 2 weeks until I bring it in for the 15k service and hopefully they can replace/fix this under warranty... as I am planning on selling the car soon!

My first set of rear struts were replaced under warranty at 26,000 miles,
and my second set replaced under extended-warranty at 52,000 miles.

Now at 80,000 they are clunking again...shocking !

Yeah I hear the 04 guys have lots more trouble than the others...or maybe its just what I think

Just put coilovers man like TiC or T2's I think Myles has another lower range of coilovers for street use. 3 bad sets is pretty bad

Took it in and both fronts are being replaced under warranty. I guess what I thought was the right rear was the right front. If you are hearing this sound and your warranty is almost up, make sure you go in! It's odd this is a recurring problem Subaru didn't (hasn't?) fixed.

yes, stiction (static friction is an issue here) close examination under collimated monochromatic light shows many waves in the surface of the outer tube (it's got a name but i don't know what it is!) near where the that tube and the seal interface (when the car's loaded of course).

people wanted to blame KYB for having too soft material on the tube. i bought a PSS9 bilstein kit and i have the same problem. mr. luvjuggs is indeed correct.

it's a total bummer, though, isn't it?

Its just noise...i just put brand new pss9's we'll see how long they last...everyone who reads up on this issue learns there is little to completely eliminate this...I think any car with these inverted design strut have this issue...its a con amongst many pro's
