You don't grease from underneath the car. No wheel removal necessary. You have to jack the back of the care up, slide the dust boot that goes over the rear struts up, and grease up the shiny strut shaft. Your strut is the tubular thing that's inside the coil springs.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic grease in a can so I smear it on with latex gloves. When the suspension moves up and down, it will distribute the grease.

Is it severely detrimental and unsafe to drive on? My passenger rear is the culprit...Will other parts be damaged in the process?

There is nothing wrong. nothing is broken or damaged. all is ok. there is just a clunking noise from the rear of the vehicle.

What is the source of failure on these clunky struts ?( I have clunk too)

Is it internal in the valving?

Ok I only got to pg9 on this thread. I think I have the clunk but let me explain. I have Group N mounts
Prodrive Springs
Perrin links & Swaybars
GT Spec Lateral link brace
GT SPec Trunk Cage kit
Ti STi Front strut bar
Race ALK's
Roll Center Adjustment kit
14mm camber bolts in rear struts
Stock front camber bolts + 14mm camber bolts for the second bolt (all 4 are camber bolts)
TiC fender braces
Cusco Type1 under arm bar
Steering rack bushings
Now all this is very difficult to reproduce.
1) When I come to a stop sometimes the rear left strut feels like it just released a little more with a sort of pop (not a pop sound, kinda like a vaccum release...i could relate this to when finishing up the humpty dumpty with the lady )
2) When I back up the driveway and go over this slight bump (sometimes) there sounds like a rattle)

I am in Toronto area has anyone had luck with getting an 05 STi fixxed under warranty...do I have the clunk?

DOES THIS MEAN I CAN HAVE CATASTROPHIC FALIURE??

For ref this how the trunk cage looks like

It has to do with the inherent strut design but it is also because an insufficient amount of grease is used on the the rear struts from the factory.

I pulled my stock struts apart with 1k miles on them. There was very little grease in them and the vein (can't think of what else to call it. it's the indention that runs all the way around the inside top of the strut sleeve that is supposed to be full of grease) had only smudges of grease. There were globs of grease that had been heated to the point that they were hard in consistency almost cooked. I had no clunking problems, yet. I cleaned and then properly repacked the struts with synthetic grease.

I only ran the stock struts for an additional 3k miles with cobb springs followed by sti/arai springs before going with ohlins fixed perch struts to better match the sti/arai spring rates. my car doesn't get a lot of mileage aside from track days and autoxs but inspecting them during spring swaps for that short time showed no abnormal wear and no grease consumption.

Is this a catastrophic failure or what? I need to know if this is noise vs failure of my strut. If its just a annoyance I can live with it but i dont want a failure. I'll appreciate being pointed in the correct direction.
