Use Synthetic lube....

WD40 isn't lube and shouldn't be used in any application that calls for lube. It's a water displacer.

if there was a way that the dust shield would somehow actually protect the rear struts, we probably wouldnt be having these issues...there is such a huge gap around the dustshield and the body of the strut that all kinds of dirt can get up in there.

Performed the steps here (Rear Strut Clunk Log) when swapping my STi pinks out for my stock springs. Since everything was apart it was very easy to use the lube on the strut. We'll see how long things stay quiet... but for now im very happy!

helped my friend with an '04 w/ 60k on it last year to lube the struts and it worked like a champ.
its been 10 months and 12k miles, but the car is now mine !!!!!
I hear the clunk... time for a re-lube!
its easy to do, I cant belive so many people complain about it or have the dealer replace them, oh well.

good post about NOT using WD40 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just joined the Strut clunk club....yayyy!!!! Oh wait....boooo! Anyways, I don't really hear the "clunk" to often but I do feel it sticking. It is most noticable when slowly creeping forward at a stop sign or light and then if the car rolls back slightly I can feel the rear end drop a bit. I would assume I just need to do a grease job real quick like previously stated. I have a 05 with less than 25,000 on it so I wouldn't think the strut is bad????

In the damn dealership again for the clunking noise. Supposedly they fixed it the first time but I guess grease didn't hold like they expected. Crappy techs FTL.

Had my clunk at 15K miles. Took it to the dealer and got it replaced under warranty. So far so good, but i am expecting it to surface in the future. It seems the design is just faulty.

hehe - the thread that just won't die...

I'm on my third pair of rear struts. Now that I am out of warranty, I will be doing the grease trick henceforth...

Brought mine in for the 30k service and told him about the clunk.I said it sounds like something rolling in the trunk. When he opened the trunk i had a ton of tools in it(I'm a Carpenter). He said it was probably all the crap in there rolling around .So he lubed the whole suspension and it was gone for a day.He also tried to sell me DMS Coilovers.Next time i am going with an empty trunk.

The strut never "clunked" per say when driving the car, it was only when driving like 5mph (in a parking lot or in/out of the driveway) that I would hear a faint rattle coming from the passanger rear....

I figured it was the strut since the noize was coming from the same spot as everyone else...

When I went to pick my car up they said it wasn't the strut but the exhaust. I said "oh really" (I didn't want to argue because my Greddy Evo exhause DID rattle a lot on startup)

They said that the 04 struts were the problem but that Subaru upgraded the struts in 05 (with a different part number and same # as the 07's) to solve the problem!

I said OK and left...

Well the faint rattle is still there!

I did fix the Major rattle from the exhaust with a little duck tape folded over a few times and secured to the frame of the car....

When messing around under the car trying to fix the exhause rattle I was moving around it around quite a bit from side to side to see if there were any other "clunks/rattles" and found that there was one other.

It seemed to be coming from just before (closer to the engine) the axel back clamp/connection/gasket part!

It sounded like it was hitting a piece of tin because it had a very hollow sound to it...

However, I had to move the exhaust A LOT in order to hear this sound so I don't think that driving would cause it to move enough to procuce the sound in the right rear....

So for now, I'm just going to leave it.... if it gets worse, I'll take it back to the dealer and get them to look at it again and maybe take them for a drive....

Hope that helps!

Without reading through this entire thread Again, can someone tell me if the dealer was telling the truth about a different part number for the struts in 05/06/07????

Thanks,

Jay
This is the same thing Mastro tried to tell me. They said either my aftermarket SR*S exhaust was hitting something or the cat in my downpipe was loose and rattling.

However, they were polite and patient. After I pointed out to them that this is a well known problem on STi's and took him for a test drive in a bumpy parking lot, he brought out a machine that has 4 small sensors to listen to the strut. He put a sensor on the left strut and a sensor on the right strut, and sensors on the body next to the exhaust. When we went for a drive, there was only noise from the struts and no noise from the body near the exhaust. This was finally what convinced them it was the strut, and when we got back to the shop they immedeatly ordered me new struts.

Mine had the same issue where it would only pop at low speeds and not high speeds.

Good luck!

Check this out! I got my rear struts good-willed because I was barely out of warranty milage -- cool. But, when my car was at the dealer getting serviced, it got broke into in their fenced-in, camera-survielled lot! Nothing got stolen, but $500 later...

Kinda the most fitting part of the whole story is that is EXACTLY why I don't ever bring my car to the shop! CRIPES!
