How the hell are you getting warranty strut work done at 122,000 miles?????? Ah nm...parts warranty, how long is the parts warranty for the struts and are you getting clunk under that time?

And how do you like your 01R's? I'm getting those today to replace the 070's (loudest dam tire on the planet)

I believe parts installed by the dealer under warranty are warrantied for an additional year. If the part keeps failing within a year, then the dealer has to keep replacing it. This justifies a lemon law claim, but that's up the consumer.

Clean the grime and sand/salt off where the strut moves into the strut housing (the base), and then apply grease to lower (maybe 1 inch) of the strut shaft (the shiny metal part).

Go for a ride and confirm that your car no longer sounds like a 1983 Chrysler K-Car.

this worked for me as well and only takes like maybe 10-15 minutes per side.

Well I have a 06 STI and just went to the dealer about my rear strut. They said that it wasn't the strut but the exhaust rattling!

The strut never "clunked" per say when driving the car, it was only when driving like 5mph (in a parking lot or in/out of the driveway) that I would hear a faint rattle coming from the passanger rear....

I figured it was the strut since the noize was coming from the same spot as everyone else...

When I went to pick my car up they said it wasn't the strut but the exhaust. I said "oh really" (I didn't want to argue because my Greddy Evo exhause DID rattle a lot on startup)

They said that the 04 struts were the problem but that Subaru upgraded the struts in 05 (with a different part number and same # as the 07's) to solve the problem!

I said OK and left...

Well the faint rattle is still there!

I did fix the Major rattle from the exhaust with a little duck tape folded over a few times and secured to the frame of the car....

When messing around under the car trying to fix the exhause rattle I was moving around it around quite a bit from side to side to see if there were any other "clunks/rattles" and found that there was one other.

It seemed to be coming from just before (closer to the engine) the axel back clamp/connection/gasket part!

It sounded like it was hitting a piece of tin because it had a very hollow sound to it...

However, I had to move the exhaust A LOT in order to hear this sound so I don't think that driving would cause it to move enough to procuce the sound in the right rear....

So for now, I'm just going to leave it.... if it gets worse, I'll take it back to the dealer and get them to look at it again and maybe take them for a drive....

Hope that helps!

Without reading through this entire thread Again, can someone tell me if the dealer was telling the truth about a different part number for the struts in 05/06/07????

Thanks,

Jay

The suspension noise is easiest to replicate with people in the back seat.

Yes, the struts are different from 04. The 04's were red. 05 and on were black. Doesn't mean that they are mechanically any different though.

Doesn't anyone know if they did actually Upgrade the struts (new part mumber) to fix the problem?

I was trying to search Youtube to see if there were any vids/sound clips of the strut clunk that I could hear.... no luck...

From what you said, I probably don't have a strut "Clunk" then because it doesn't really clunk, it rattles and I can only hear it when I'm drivin slowly in a parking lot or in my driveway...

When going over speed bumps or large pot-holes there is no "clunking" or any type of nose for that matter!

Yup, after work today I went and bought some Castrol Synthetic Grease and greased both my rear struts (don't know why people say to remove wheel when that's totally not necessary??)

Anyways, drove around and YES the rattle is GONE!

Howeve, I was wondering though why its usually only the right rear that clunks and not any of the other struts? Or do they?

Should I be greasing all of the sturts?

that sounds like "the clunk" to me... starts off like clicking; if you load up the car and the trunk (as if you were bringing people to the airport ), it will be very noticeable...

most often, it's easiest to duplicate the noises driving slowly over uneven pavement, where the suspension starts to travel and gets "stuck" at the beginning of it's travel.

when i tried duplicating it, it was easier to do it in reverse over uneven pavement.

both rears will clunk eventually - clean and lube them both.

3yrs 3months @ 62k km's. Car is in for a rear driver's side strut replacement, but they originally said it's not covered under warranty. I put on 1,000 km's over the last long weekend so I'm just a bit over the 3yr/60k km warranty, but the symptoms were more subtle before earlier in the mileage.

Dealership then said they found a SOC TSB bulletin about the issue and offered free strut and I pay for labor $200cnd. I'm going to find out when the TSB came out, because I did have my last major service done at the dealer and no one told me back then (unless it really didn't exist then).

Also going to find out what the status is on the replacement strut warranty and what the policy is if there's an outstanding TSB. As I understand it, even if there are new strut part #'s, the long-term problem of this issue hasn't been resolve. Does this mean I can keep going back to get new struts every year?

DON"T USE WD40 TO LUBE STRUTS.

WD40 eats/disolves rubber very quickly!

Use Synthetic lube....

Just re-did mine today. Can't remember the last time I lubed them. Took me less than 10 minutes and that includes hauling the !@#$%^&*! heavy jack out from the house to where the car sat in the driveway, and back.

The right rear is also the first one to talk to me; dunno why.
