Took mine in on Saturday, told them about the problem and they acted like they've never heard of such a problem, but they agreed they would fix it under warranty. Surprisingly they had the rear struts in stock and all the parts required for the overhaul almost like they we're waiting for the next STi to pull in with a rear clunk. Pfffft. Shocker.

So has Subaru actually fixed the problem with the Struts or do they just replace them with another set of the same?

Seems kind of pointless if they just swap the struts that will eventually have the same problem....

Thanks,

Jay

I have the same problem on my 2005 sti(rear clunk). I took it to the dealership and they said they would'nt cover this under warranty due to the fact I lowered my car.
I would hate to raise the car back up so they will replace them. Does anyone have any other ideas not looking forward to buying coilovers either.
Also has this problem happen to anyone that has not lowered there car?

For those of you who used grease, how long has it been and has the noise come back? I read a lot of posts saying you guys sprayed or lubed it up and will let us know how long it'll last, but have not read many follow ups. Is this a almost permanent fix?

For all of you that got the struts replaced under warranty the first time... the clunk will come back, only it will come back when you're not in warranty anymore. Speaking from experience here. It appears they just replace the struts with the same garbage that will clunk again after awhile.

Now I just turn the radio up a bit.

Just lubed mine with lithium aerosol grease, worked like a champ. Took about 1 minute a side. We'll see how long it lasts.

Jack the car up (obviously on the side(s) with the problem), pull up the dust cover thats inside of the spring, exposing the base and lower half of the strut. A tip to make it easier: You can use your cars lug nut wrench to hold the dust cover out of your way by sliding it thru the spring, and under the dust cover to hold it above the area you're working on.

Clean the grime and sand/salt off where the strut moves into the strut housing (the base), and then apply grease to lower (maybe 1 inch) of the strut shaft (the shiny metal part).

Go for a ride and confirm that your car no longer sounds like a 1983 Chrysler K-Car.

I lubed my struts with Mobil 1 Synthetic grease about 5000 miles ago and it came back so I lubed them again and it's gone again. I think the fronts may actually be clunking too so I just lubed all four corners for safe measure since I have a jack and stands now after moving to a house.

I still don't understand why anyone bothers to lube their own struts. I am at 122,000 miles and have all four struts replaced under parts warranty every 20,000 miles. It's done in one day and I save $1135!

Because the dealer isn't just down the street from me with the struts in stock and every time I leave my car with someone else, that increases the chances of it getting messed up. I can jack up the car and lube the struts at my own leisure in under 10 minutes.

I understand your point and identify with it. I have at my disposal, a dealership at 25 or clear up to 120 miles and anywhere in between and I choose to go to the one 120 miles away. That's only because I receive from them, the best service.
