Mine is going in to replace both rear struts tomorrow morning. The mechanic took the car out and barely got out of the parking lot when he said "Yea, these need to be replaced".

Go warranty!

Default Alternative Grease

I did the grease option yesterday morning. I wanted something more than a lithium based grease, and used the teflon product Energy Suspension sells with their urethane suspension kits. It is much more viscous, and designed to limit noise on metal to plastic contact. My only concern now is dust collecting in the grease and scoring the piston shaft...

http://www.energysuspension.com/pages/univ2.html

While in there I found that Subaru uses a plastic sleeve on the lower springs to minimize noise. This had slipped back and off the springs. I cleaned that area as well and used some blue silicone to hold each end in place. I will check in 200 and 500 miles to see how both hold up. The clunk was completely gone for my commute today. My car is out of warranty, so the other option no longer exists unless a recall takes place. That is unlikely as long as safety is not an issue.

Update: The tightening of the rear strut tower bolts didn't solve the clunk. The clunk came back in full force yesterday which is less than a month from when I took it in. Looks like that visit was a waste and got my wheel curbed too. Damn it.

Further update: the reason why it stopped clunking after the trip to the dealer was because they put the car on the lift and the rear suspension got fully extended. Probably the same time when they damaged my wheel when removing it to check the suspension. I jacked up each side of the car all the way and put it back on the ground. No more clunk again.

SUBARU HAS NEW FIX FOR STRUT CLUNK
Okay my struts were replaced a year ago and now they have been clunking for two weeks so I know all the signs pushed the rear end and got the clunk, every bump every stop has a clunk or should I say a phantom bowling ball rolling around in the trunk.Im close to the end of my warrenty(2 months left) so I took it in ,first when calling to make appointment with the same dealer that replaced them the last time they acted like they never heard of such a thing that pissed me off.I droped it off today they call back and said my aftermarket exhaust was hitting the gas tank,RIIIIIGHT
So I go pick it up and their is no clunk and I now know what they did they just lube it up temp fix till the warrenty ends and then the problem is all yours. Before I went in I pushed on the rear and got the clunk and it stuck an inch down then I lifted the car back up with two fingers. Now it dose not do that.So beware if your close to your warrenty ending they may try this.I cant prove they did this but if they didnt then I must be mentaly retarded and should move into an adult foster care home.

I wish I knew what it sounds like. I have a new pop or rattle when I hit bumps but sounds more like something is loose. Maybe the back window. No one ever sits in the back so I cant find it.

sorry to hear that. the dealership i went to also told me there was nothing wrong with the struts, then i showed them by putting the service manager in the passenger seat, and backing up slowly over uneven pavement at the dealership. the "sticking" and the subsequent "clunking" got him in the know.

2005 STi - 37xxx miles when the driver side rear strut got the clunk. I didn't notice it at first, a passenger in the rear seat noticed. When I push down on the trunk I get the clunk. Passed warranty so I'm on my own on it.

With this few miles on most people's STi...and getting this problem I don't think a factory replacement is a cost effective fix. Will aftermarket coil overs fix the problem?

Well after I got my car back my first impression was like wow I didn't realize how bouncy the rear had become. My rear struts were defiantly not doing their job anymore. It rides like it is new again. The dealer replaced both rear struts and strut tops. I wrote the prices down from the dealer invoice but of course if you are paying for this out of pocket its probably more I’m sure. All I paid for was 60$ to have the tires rotated and balanced. That’s an expensive rotate and balance if you ask me.<O</O

I have had the clunking going on for the past 1,000 miles. The car just got it's rear struts replaced today. I took it in for some other things as well, alarm beeper not working, brake lights went out, and I think I either need a new clutch or new synchros, because I am having troubles shifting into second and fourth sometimes.

Just outside of warranty here too. Dealer quoted me $1160 to replace both rear struts... I'm thinking there is probably a higher quality aftermarket solution. I had a smiliar clunking not too long back and it was diagnosed as my sway bar links, which were replaced, but the clunk has returned.

Anybody have a good image/illustration of the rear suspension assembly?
