my stock struts were nice n quiet, i replaced them with tein super streets before i even hit 1,000 miles and the teins are loud as hell.. i hate them but i love them at the same time.. so i have a basically brand new set of STi KYB's and springs w/ less than 1,000 miles sitting in my attic at work.. is anyone buying these things?

anyone who has clunking struts that the dealer will give back you can kindly send them to me. I will pay shipping. A little clunking in perfectly good inverted struts doesn't bother me.

PM me with your address and I will send you a prepaid box to ship them in.

It wasn't just the sound, but I can feel the clunking. The drive to work today felt like there was no dampening on that corner of the car.

Maybe you guys need to swap to metal bushings. Then you won’t notice the struts as much.

Um... okay?

I have a feeling that feeling the driver side rear tire bounce down the road wouldn't feel much different with or without a different strut mount or bushing.

Just to add my .02 - it took 5 months from the time that my clunking got bad enough for me to complain about it to the day that both rear struts got replaced under warranty at our small dealership.

It started on one side only and, of course, they could not duplicate the noise the first time that I took it in. Then when they did agree that there was something, they decided that they would replace the rear end links... problem NOT solved! By the time that my struts were finally done, both sides were clunking constantly and driving me crazy! I almost didn't want to drive the car any more.

Interestingly enough, I took pages from this forum into the dealership with me when I first brought it to their attention and they did nothing with the information. Even though I know of at least one person in Canada that had this very same problem, my dealership said that there was no service bulletin or awareness about this. Thankfully, my second set of struts has behaved fine and I've had them for five months now.

I have that clunk in my 05 STI. was not sure what it was, and I can now call my dealer and inform them of the clunk to hopefully get a remedy.

Sue - my strut appears to have deteriorated much more rapidly than yours. It went from a barely noticable clunk to a muffled rattle (like the wheel is falling off) over the course of ~4 weeks.

bobd - bounce the car up and down by standing on the rear door sill closest to the clunk sound. If you can reproduce the clunk that way, welcome to the club.

I took mine into the dealer thursday, and of course they stated, "it's your aftermarket sway bar and endlinks causing the clunk, not the strut." So I railed on them for awhile about what I had read. They decided they should do a diagnostic test with an 'electronic ear' or something. They came back (after charging me 50 dollars) to say that the clunk was indeed from the perrin endlinks and they had tightened the bolts on it.
Sure enough.. the clunk was gone ... for 40 miles!!!! Now it has returned with a vengeance...

I'm wondering if getting the car up on the lift (a four point lift) somehow let the strut 'stretch' and fix the clunking temporarily...

and now im out fifty bucks until i figure out what is going on...

Mines gone away temporarily :-? I had to cancel my appt at the stealership because I didnt think I would be able to reproduce the noise for them. Im happy as long as it doesnt make noise though

rmo55c - put your stock parts back on, wait for the clunk to return, and go back to your dealer.

I highly advise not to "rail" on them. Just ask them to explain why your car with all stock parts makes a clunk.

Dropped the STi off at the dealer this morning for the left-rear strut and mount to be replaced. They are going to warranty the work, and gave me a rental car (some coach-like Chrysler) for the day.

The strut makes all sorts of noise at low speed now.
