I went through the same greif with my 99 Cobra. They had a fierce rear end clunk or a pop when the IRS first came out(very weak)

My 06' STI has a creaking/clunking noise (15k miles). Sounds like its comming from the rear right side and is only audible and low speeds (ie. parking lots, driveways, small bumps). I made an appointment for the dealership to look at it and as i was taking it down there i noticed the noise was gone.. great timing.. so as i suspected they werent going to find a problem. They said the spare tire tools were loose and that could have been the problem. However.. its a couple days later now and the noise is back as before. I guess i just need to take it down there one day when its actually making the sound.

Well, tightening of the rear strut top bolts seemed to have gotten rid of the clunk for now. However, I was rotating my tires this weekend and noticed a gouge in my front driver's side wheel lip that wasn't there before. My wheels were pristine before I dropped my car off at Santa Monica Subaru and I didn't notice it when I picked up my car because of the brake dust.

I left a stern voicemail for the service writer, but there really isn't anything I can do to prove that they messed up my wheel. Needless to say, I will never take my car back there again.

I am guessing that it is not going to be covered under powertrain warranty

So...If I already had my rear suspension replaced once (17k miles) will I be able to get them done again when (at ~28k) I expect them to go out again? The car will be 3 years old in may and I don't know what my warranty is.

Also, are they just replacing the struts with the same crappy struts or are they redesigned to prevent future clunking?

I just put my summer wheels on, and at the same time, I lifted up the dust boots and sprayed WD40 in there - the clunk is now gone - it may only be a temporary solution, however in my opinion, is a hell of a lot easier than bring in the car to get struts replaced, only to have the clunk return sometime later.

Just had my rear passenger strut replaced along with the top mount on my '06 @ 16k miles under warranty. Subaru of Austin took care of me well. No more annoying clunk. Thanks guys.

mine is at Subaru right now getting the rear struts replaced.

i was told by a technician that the red colored struts are no longer being used by Subaru to replace the clunking one, that they are now superceded by a black [hopefully better designed] version.

any truth to this?

edit: my car's Subaru warranty expires this Saturday

tough call - my suspension was 100% stock, so they would have no problem with mine...

i'm positive that there are posts in this [monster] thread that has modified suspensions with the clunk...

some dealers are mod friendly, others are not. i would try searching this thread or waiting for someone in your shoes with dealer experience to reply. sorry flatthump.
