I get treated pretty well by my stealership, but I didn't even bother to ask bcuz of my mileage. Maybe there's something SOA's doing because it's a WIDELY known problem.

I HATE the clunk, clunk, clunk pulling out of my driveway. Not to mention the body roll....

Hi guys,
A new version of rear shocks has been developped by Subaru. I had them installed 1 month ago. So far so good. For your information,
the new part numbers of the shocks are: 20360FE901 and 20360FE911
(the old part numbers was: 20360FE900 and 20360FE910)
If you go to the dealer to have those shocks changed, look for those new part numbers.

Hope this help!

They are not essentially acknowledging the defect without issuing a recall. This is sucks for me because my bumper to bumper warranty is finished.

Hey guys,

I have an 06 STI. I get a click/cluck only when I'm pulling out of a parking lot and go over the small lip/edge and the rear shocks compress and i'm under power. Doesn't happen when I'm going over a speed bump.

Therefore, I thought it might just be the rear diff doing its thing as there could be a small amount of rear wheel slippage while going over the lip.

Anyways I'm assuming that these part numbers are specific to US and not Canada... anyone know the New and Old Canadian Part numbers that apply?

If these new shocks were only 1 month old, then i'm going to assume that I might need to get them installed as well??????

Thanks

Jay

I just had my shocks replaced by the dealership today. The tech took it for a test drive and they were still making noise. They decided that it may not be the shock at all, and may be the top mounts. So he upped the torque a bit on them, and the noise went away. They said Torque specs for the strut tops are around 17ft/lbs. Lord knows what he torqued them to. He said around 85 ft/lbs., but they would have broke long before that. So far the noise is gone, and as far as I can tell, the studs haven't broken.

I guess I will keep everyone updated.

The numbers I gave are Canadian. I don't know if the American numbers are the same though.

I joined the Strut Clunk Club for about 24 hours. I am not in it anymore though. Using Majin/Rev's technique the clunk is gone.

I have the Apexi coilovers on my 04 STi. Since I've had to drive through a dirt road to get to my parking, I developed a clunk. Next day off I inspected the shafts on the strut and dirt/dust got on the shaft and seal. I cleaned it all of and greased the shaft and at the seal with Mobil 1 synth grease, clunk went away. After another week of having to drive through the dirt road it came back.
I may have to get a set of accordian dust boots that go over the shaft to keep the shaft and piston seal clean. Has anyone added this?

One time clicks or clunks going over imperfections in the road are not "strut clunk." The infamous strut clunk that every STI with stock rear struts gets eventually is far worse -- sounds like something in the rear suspension is coming apart, and happens even on very smooth surfaces at low speeds. In fact, the worst for me was driving in parking lots.

It also seems to crop up most often when the struts get to ~20K miles, although I've heard of people getting it sooner.

I'm torn between having my rear struts replaced, or ponying up for Ohlins . In the meantime I grease them every month and they stay quiet. They still have some stiction that I feel sometimes when I come to a stop or fill the gas tank, but no noise.

Cool Tell me why??

I'm confused.

On 09-28-2006 (three weeks ago tomorrow) while my car was in the air getting brake pads, I threw some basic heavy grease on the rear struts; didn't do a very thorough job of it either, just made sure I smeared it all the way around as close to the cartridge tube as possible. Ever since, NO CLUNK!

Do you think the seal just dries out, or what? It's bizzare.

There is a grease reservoir under the seal, eventually it runs out of grease, and the piston goes dry and starts clunking and sticking. Putting grease on the piston does help for a while. Even better would be to remove the strut, take it apart, and put grease back in the reservoir so it will last. What I'd like to know is what kind of grease comes in the strut from the factory, and can it be purchased?

They're actually KYBs aren't they? Try various search phrases with KYB and strut grease on google .

Even though this is aftermarket, the same solutions apply. I have the Apexi N1 type v coilovers. Since having to drive through a dirt road to get to my parking at work, it had developed a clunk so I greased the shaft surface with Mobile 1 synthetic bearing/suspension grease and clicking and clunking went away. A week later it came back. I finally had time to regrease but this time I noticed the grease at the base of the seal had just accumulated small rocks and dirt.

Last night I had time to do this. I jacked up one side and placed on stands and removed the wheel to access the area. With the struts in place, I first wiped the grease off shaft and seal area and further cleaned with some brake cleaner spray. I used a Lisle panel removing tool to lift up the seal by wedging the tool against the spring for leverage. This is a great tool for this since it has rounded edges and won't harm the shaft you slip. I bought some small wood handled applicators with foam squares at the end of it but removed the foam on it and which left a 1" wide flat spatula to apply the grease into the seal. Some type of small syringe to insert the grease into the space would have been less messy though. Then I pressed down the seal and then I was done. Clunking/clicking is gone. Ill report back to see how long this lasts.
