Strut ordered, no hassle. Another +1 for the dealership I go to. These guys have consistently taken care of any problems I have ever had...

Wow, it didn't take long but the clunk is coming back even with the new shocks. The new ones lasted about 20K miles before the rattling and clunking noises started again.

I think they just keep replacing them with the same defective parts until your car goes out of warranty, then your stuck.

Inverted struts are prone to 'clunk'-ing. Putting new inverted struts in does not change that fact. Buy some white grease and smile every time you use it, thinking about all the strength and rigidity you're gaining and the unsprung weight you're saving.

When mine started clunking there was an obvious problem as I could move the problem corner of the car by ~1" and it would stay where I put it until I moved it back. Will the grease trick fix that?

Another one to the list. I have a 05 STI with about 36,200 miles on it. I have been noticing the clunk sound for awhile now and finally read this thread. Did the little bouncy on the rear door sill and got the noise. Will definitely try the grease and see if it helps.

Once again I'm a member. I think the first time was around 20,000 miles. I'm currently at 35,000 miles and the clunk has returned. I have aabout 1,000 miles lef ton my warranty. But the dealer said they woudln't replace the struts again since I'm on aftermarket spring and group n tops. I figure I'll try greasing them and see what happens. Coilovers may or may not be in my very near future.

Will the dealer replace the strut if they see a rear swaybar with aftermarket endlinks?

I noticed mine clunking at about 17,000 miles. Had the car at the dealership yesterday and they mentioned the outstanding bullitin. I mentioned that this is a common problem and they were working with SOA (I am in Canada with a US car) to get approval for the parts. Clunking is getting worse with time... and is now an exaggerated creaking sound from the rear end as well.

I think I am about to join this club. I have noticed that when I go over bumps in the road, I hear a thunk in the back of the car. I knew this was a problem. I opened my trunk and pressed down on the car. Started hearing a clunk. Guess I will call my dealer in the morning.

Do I look like I give a ****? sorry, common expression in my field of work... the easiest way for me to tell when my strut was bad was to try to lift the car on the corner that was clunking, I got over an inch of travel without trying too hard...

<TABLE class=tborder cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR title="Post 815911" vAlign=top><TD class=alt1 align=middle width=125>pantag</TD><TD class=alt2>Will the dealer replace the strut if they see a rear swaybar with aftermarket endlinks?</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Most likely they will give you a hard time about the aftermarket parts, but some dealerships dont say anything. A lot of times they will turn their head if you put the stock parts back on. The only way to know for sure is to ask...

Add another one to the list:

2005 STI w/14,800 miles - (purchased in October 2004)

Rear passenger side strut being replaced next week (along with my sometimes "chirping" stock alarm mechanism)
