"'04 and (presumably) 05 STi struts are manufactured by KYB (look closely at your struts), henceforth the quality control issues (for those who have ever purchased other KYB products)."

....are you sure? 2005 sti's have bilstein struts.

I took my 06 STI in to the dealer a week ago. They heard the noise and then washed out the struts. They told me they washed out a lot of mud and rock. After that, no more noise, for about 3 days. As of this weekend, it is now back just as loud as it was before.

I live on a gravel road, so a little mud and rock is the wheel well area doesn't surprise me. I could see on a rainy day how the mud could stick to things. However, since the struts were washed out a week ago, it hasn't rained. Only dust could have gotten back into the struts. I suspect the water lubricated it enough to quiet it for a while. Back to the dealer I go...

Yea, MY 05 has the issue, 30k and took it to the dealer, they found the clunking in the Passanger side rear and are replacing both rear struts and top caps they call it, they also said the ones I am getting are the FIXED ones that are slightly modified to fix the issue, what I think is this....They are the same ones, but it wont show till ur way out of warranty, but if they are modified, and they do the job, AWESOME....spring going on 4 days after...hehe

Well I've got 45k on my 04 with the clunkity clunk, however I just followed Majins guide (link in post 1) and everything is great again. I used my silver anti-seize paste all around the base of the strut where the piston enters. Quiet as a mouse, a non-squeaky mouse that is.

Just wanted to say thanks to Rev and Majin as their posts aided me to fix my "what the hell is that sound" problem I had.

Also, I did take off my wheels to clean them since I had the car lifted, but I could have easily done this without removing the wheels. So without wheel removal, this is a 20 minute fix.

Just took my car in for the clunk. Dealer is replacing both rears with new ones under warranty (25k miles). In case anyone's interested the part numbers and descriptions are:

20360FE900 - STRUT CP R R
and
20360FE911 - STRUT CP REA

**edited for spelling**

Just got back from my local dealer with some absolutely stupid news. My '05 STi has the rear strut clunk, I have GF210's, and the dealer is willing to replace my rear struts if I put the OE springs back on first.

I'm calling SOA today.

Just for clarification...

Vehicle: '05 STi
Suspension mods: GF210's at approx 4,000 miles.
Symptom: Rear strut creak: approx 10,000 miles
Dealer's terms: agreed to replace struts if I put the OE springs back on first.

add another member to the long list of people with the dreaded clunk... I first heard mine yesterday while pulling out of a parking spot... I crawled underneath this morning to make sure it wasnt a just a loost endlink or sway. I could push the back of the car up about an inch and it would stay there. I could then pull it back down where it would again stay... My only concern is that the sway would rotate in the endlink even though the bolt is tight. Going to the dealer this week. Suspension is all stock, my dealer has been excellent with any issues I have ever had. Ill update with any new news...

How loud is a strut clunk? I recently started having strut creak...but theres no loud banging sound unless i go over a speedbump. I can replicate a creaking sound by bouncing up and down on the passenger door sill or by even pushing down on the back. It's not really loud and can only be heard when under 10mph.

I took it to the subaru dealership to have it checked out but the mechanic said it was normal and that they can't do anything about it. I had to pay a $45 inspection fee just for that...

My car is in the dealer right now getting new struts under warranty. I'm at 42K now, and the only reason they're doing it is because its the 3rd time its been in there for this issue. The previous 2 times it was in, the car was under warranty. First they said they couldn't replicate the problem. Next they replaced the top hats, now they're finally doing the struts.
