20,000 miles 2004 STi - dealer replaced both rear struts under warranty.
How do I find out if it is replaced with identical struts and will have the same issue 15k from now or if I have improved ones? IF there is such a thing?

Thanks!!

probably ask em what part number they installed. i assume the improved struts should have a different part number. on the other hand the old struts could be discontinued and u automatically got the newer ones. just get the number, post it up here somewhere and someone will give u an answer, good luck

I am an official member of the Strut Clunk club, crap. My right rear strut clunks incessantly. I actually had two people in my car the other day and they both start to complain about that "annoying" noise. Sucks! I have an 05 with 18,000 miles and the clunk seems to be getting worse.

until Subaru does something with the strut design, Rev has identified the problem and a solution that lasts as long as your oil before a change

(do this every time you change your oil )

thanks again majin, i realise it gets annoying to always remind people of the solution.

Man im getting slightly worried about my clunking though. its not the strut clunk though. im very curious as to what can possibly cause some clunking in the back...if the diff checks out. i heard cv joints could cause some clunks, but while turning at low speeds?

not really annoying - most people come in here to post about their clunk which is good - but they fail to see that Rev already found a solution, (albeit few month lasting solution).

with respect to your issue, do you feel any binding at all at low speeds? - maybe you should open a new thread for that if searching comes up empty...

no there isnt really binding, just mid leveled multiple metallic sounding clunks. i know what u mean about the binding, and after a year im sort of used to the clunking u would get when switching the dccd to manual, but this one sounds is different. its kind of tough to narrow down the clunking since many people seem to think that the dccd clunking isnt normal. at least everytime i look up clunking, diff or slow or turning, i get something related to the dccd clunk. i wish i could record it. the only recorder i have is my mic on my laptop, i dunno if it will come off...any tips on recording sound inside a car?

I had the same slow-speed turning clunks at the back of my '05. First started as a clunk whenever the rear of the car 'settled' after coming to a stop, and then clunked again when starting away. This was definitely fixed by replacing the struts (under warranty) and hasn't come back again after ~1,000 miles.

I was convinced it was CV joint or diff problems, but had the dealer do the struts first just to eliminate those.

Awsome...im glad it u solved the problem. im dealing with a bunch of unknowledgeable dealerships, so i figured the louder the sound gets the more obvious it will be to find the problem. im getting the strut clunk everyone seems to have on this thread, so my struts will be changed for sure.

Do u get the clunks when turning? and do they sound metallic

I wouldn't say they sounded metallic, just because the sound was so muffled. But I could definitely feel the turning clunks through the chassis - it was quite annoying and had me concerned that the rear diff was getting fuxored.

yeah thats what im feeling, i keep thinking that the rear diff has something wrong. but i got it checked and i was told it was fine. i know for a fact my struts are clunk like theres no tomorrow..i gotta get them fixed.

did ure car get louder the more u drove it? mine would be really quiet then if i go for a 45 min drive...the sound would be horrible.

Yes - definitely seems to get worse after extended driving. I live about 1 hour from a large city. I never had a problem unless I went into the city for errands, appts, etc. and then the noise was really obvious. As long as I stayed up here in the rural mountains, no problems at all.

gargleblaster, it seems we might have the same problem....man i hope ure right, you would have effectively pinpointed a problem ive been going through for about 6 months now. Dont worry im not completely taking ure word for it but im glad someone seems to have gone through what i went through, i was extremely puzzled by this whole thing.

so essentially its small clank clank clanks....while ure turning slowly...and when u sort of pick up speed or straighten out the wheels it goes?
