I think my car is having this problem as well. I just realized it today when I was driving with the music down. My car is a 05 with 5,400 miles on it. How do I know for sure it is the rear strut clunk? Or should I just bring my car in to the dealer and have them look at it anyways? It is almost not noticeable when the radio is set at volume 5+. It is only having minor clunks. Maybe I will go outside later and try pushing the driver side rear and see if I can hear any clunk.

Jack the car up from the rear ( so both rear wheels are off the ground ) ... leave it like that for like 10 minutes .. then bring the car down ... Drive it around. If you can't hear the clunks, you gots the issue

Thanks for the advice. Will do that later on tonight or hopefully tomorrow. Thanks again.

I just fixed mine, didn't feel like dealing with subaru, or have them put another set of struts on that will do it anyway so I just cleaned the shafts real good with WD-40 and then applied some Mobil One synthetic grease to it around the strut wiper.

Good to go, no clunk, no weird settling problems. Saved a lot of money and time...

Cool. Although I think that the M1 grease wouldn't attach to the strut piston if it's slick with WD-40. if you use it just for cleaning I think it's ok though... but good to hear it worked ... let us know how much time between the lubing

Ok, after getting extensive tunage/upgrades to my STi at SOG (Subaru of Gwinnet) in Atlanta, I was sitting in the passenger seat while road tuning and noticed the clunck. I now have a new strut coming in for install this week. This is the only issue I have with my car. I heard it doesn't cause issues with handling, just is very annoying. I wonder why Subaru won't have a recall "inspection" to check them out...

Wilco, and I used the WD-40 just to clean and re wet the rubber wiper, then dried the shaft real well and greased.

I have been talking to a few of you regarding some clunks that i hear on the back of my car. I can sort of seperate 3 different clunks. 2 of which i think i pretty much have an idea and the last one im asking for ure help please. I have no idea what it could be. Ive been thinking of recording it so that some of u can hear it. i dont really know what best tools could be used to get the clearest voice, ill try something and if u have any suggestions please feel free to pm me. Here are the three sounds, all three happen at low speeds mostly when turning left or right. Ive already gotten my rear diff checked and was told it was fine.

1. The right rear side clunks on small bumps (I believe this is the rear strut problem everyone is getting) im gonna give the lubing a shot.

2. Regular diff clunks when on manual

3. THIS IS THE ONE THAT WORRIES ME: multiple little clanks with some slight grinding as im turning sharply left or right. it happens as the car starts to move and dies as the car picks up speed. the whole time while im turning. happens under any setting even auto on the dccd.

I know some of you out there are subaru super pros. So far i havent been able to meet someone who knows there stuff as much as some of u guys. Im planning to pass by a new dealership soon, or maybe try something myself. Either way im looking for any ideas, advice, opinion. Thank you SOOO much everyone. Im sorry if those who know me have already read all this, its just me being worried.

After really getting tired of the rattling, I took my 2005 STi into the dealership. They confirmed I had two bad rear struts. They will have to order them directly from Subaru. The dealer claims this he hasn't seen many of these come up. Does anybody know if the 2006 struts will fit a 2005?

Here's something of interest... I picked the STi up this afternoon and he said that I had the "upgraded struts" already installed. Apparently sometime during the second half of 2005 they upgraded the struts to the ones they are putting in the 2006. I've got the black struts and I started getting the clunk / rattling around 20K miles. I'm curious if this is going to surface on the 2006's

$5.99 for Mobil1 grease that will last me more than a lifetime, 10 minutes in the garage and my struts are as silent as new.

Continue with the thread.
