or maybe they are going to make everyone realize it is just a lubrication issue and stop throwing away perfectly good struts when all they need is a spritz of grease.

I really don't care what they do as long as there are no more threads about it here.

Ditto. We have posted the solution to your clunkiness a gazillion times. Go lubricate your struts and be happy. Mine don't clunk since I used my Mobil 1 grease (and this was 3 months ago)

When I had my 04' STi, I had the struts replaced twice. It seemed like every 15 thousand miles, I had to change them. This was one of the reasons I traded it in for an '06. I was very relieved when I checked out the struts on the '06 and noticed they were black and made by subaru. The ones on the '04 and '05 STi's almost seem like they are disposable racing struts or something. What is the biggest problem about this is that Subaru just replaces them with the same struts, so you know they are going to go bad again.

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that I too noticed the clunking on my 05. It started about 2 weeks ago and I currently have 22000 miles on it and it only occurred on the passenger rear side. It was not a constant clunking, but it did occur more frequently at lower speeds and sharp stops and starts. I could replicate it by pressing down on that side and even by pulling up on the car by the wheel well. In reading the posts to this thread I picked up a can of mobile one lubricant and jacked the rear up and spread some of it around the strut (sounds kinda gay (not that theres anything wrong with that )) . After I did that I put the car back down and jacked it back up (because I really heard it when I initially jacked the car up) and it was gone. I took it for a spin and have not heard it since. I'll give another update in a couple days. Thanks to all that contributed to this thread because that noise was really bugging me.

Awesome to hear that lubing the struts work.

You'll probably have to relube once every 2 months. Depends on how well did you put in the grease.

The '06 Sti has completely different struts on it. Instead of the MacPherson struts, it has black Subaru struts. They are not as stiff as the MacPherson's, and I doubt that they will have the creaking problem, although I haven't put enough miles on them yet for the creaking to appear. I wish you guys had figured out that all it takes is some lube to fix the creaking, because besides the cooling system problems I kept having, the constant replacing of the struts was one of the reasons I got rid of my '04. The '04 & '05's are definitely quicker than the '06 because they weigh less, but the handling on the '06 dominates!!

I must have a few thousand miles on now since applying a touch of oil on the struts, still no signs of clunking. Saves me from buying those coilovers for a while at least....

MacPherson is the strut design/type, not the brand. MacPherson struts and Chapman struts, there may be other designs out there. You still have MacPherson struts - name of the suspension design - like multilink, double wishbone, or upper/lower A-arm. Evo's don't have Mitsubishi-link in the rear, still Multilink.

'04 and (presumably) 05 STi struts are manufactured by KYB (look closely at your struts), henceforth the quality control issues (for those who have ever purchased other KYB products).

Also, I too have had strut clunking issues. I lubed them up with some Valvoline penentrating white lithium grease spray which isn't quite like the regular thick lithium grease. Works real good but seems to wear off after a thousand miles or so. I'll be trying out some other lubricants in the near future. Thought about trying gun lube like CLP or LAW but I don't know how those will react with rubber seals and gaskets.

Default Dealer told me no more replacements too !!

The Big Valley Dodge and Subaru Dealer told me on 1/04/06 that they are not replacing the clunking struts under warranty because it will eventually start making the same noise. They said Subaru is working on a fix and when the improved struts come out they would do the warranty work.
But they didn't know how long we'd have to wait for the fix to come out...
