Took my car to the dealer for an oil change and to report a rear clunking noise. Before I could tell them it was probably my rear struts, they said subaru knows of the problem with the rear struts and has instructed dealers to replace them as soon as a car shows signs of strut issues. The dealer ordered them on the spot and gave me a loaner car for my trouble. I'm just concerned that replacing struts and mounts will last a short time and fail again. What then, are dealers going to keep replacing struts? Or are we getting defective stock struts from the factory and once replaced no more issues?

Yes, they will replace under warranty, especially if you purchased the extended warranty. I had my third strut replaced at around 52,000 and the fourth strut at 65,000.

Hmmmm, as per advice from someone else on this board, I greased my stock struts at about 30k, and the sound went away shortly thereafter. Have you guys tried this?

Or... is the greasing not the solution?

Maybe I am thinking about a different clunking...Everytime I shift hard I hear a loud CLUNK in the rear, but that is normal correct? I had knocking previously...it was due to my transmission being loose. Local Suby dealer put some ears around the car and located it was coming from the tranny, so they tightened it and everything is fine now.

I went to Subaru and they changed my struts under warranty.

The best way I can describe the noise is...it is mostly as low speeds, and it sounds like a bowling pin is rolling around in the trunk.

Exactly, at first I though my jack had come loose. When that was still in there snug I figured the spare tire was loose, no luck. Turned to be a rear strut clunk.

So the problem is the actual struts? So if you replace that stuff w/ an aftermarket suspension setup, then you don't have anymore problems right? If I get an STi, the first thing I'll do is drop it, so that would in essence fix that problem if it were existent?

The problem is the strut's piston, it has lubrication issues. Once the lubricant or the strut seals dries out, it sticks, creating the thumping noise.

This is relieved by applying some suspension grease to the rear struts shaft.

Default Dealer Told Me No More Strut Replacements, Wtf????!!!

well, after taking in my car for the second time to check out the driver rear strut (already had the rear passenger strut replaced), they said they strut will not be replaced. "it is a normal sound that comes from the strut and thus, cannot be replaced or fixed." oooookay? i already had one replaced for the same reason....well to make things more interesting, i called today and he said subaru has directed them to "stop all strut replacement issues until further notice." wtf, wtf, wtf, wtf......this is big valley dodge and subaru btw, in van nuys, ca. can anyone back this up? thanks, d

Maybe they are finally going to do a recall on the 04? Before I traded mine in. I had the rear struts replaced twice. The thrid time they dismissed it as tire pressure. I didn't believe them for a second but my trade in was already accepted.
