2004, 24k miles

Rear struts replaced 12/1/05 by dealer, downtime was ~4 hours, problem gone, steering is again straight and it drives perfect.

Does anyone know if Subaru will replace the struts if the car is on aftermarket (Tanabe GF210 Springs and Group N Tops) parts or will them seeing the springs and tops replaced void the warranty? I get them in the mail tomorrow and cant wait to install but just wondering when or if i do get the clunk will i be able to replace or will i have to switch to stock springs then take it to the dealer? TIA!!
oh yeah MY05 STi

Yeah, they probably won't replace your struts with aftermarket springs and hats.

Um, well I had a nice service manager when I took my car in to replace the failed stock endlinks. He said he would replace them for free this one time but next time it would be on my bill since I was running aftermarket springs.

This is a defect in the design of the stock struts. It has nothing to do with you running after market gear. They should replace the parts without any questions. That's why there is a warranty in the first place.

I was running Prodrive Springs and Group N Tops when the clunk started on my 2005. I took the car into the dealer and they said I would have to sign a waiver before they could do any work. I asked it I could replace the stock parts before then and they said yes. I never got around to putting on the stock springs and tops though. Anyway, I dropped it off at the dealer and had them take note on the work order that I was running after market springs and the group n tops. I never signed a waiver even after asking the service manager about it. They called a few hours later and I picked up the car. there was note on the invoice that they wouldn't replace anymore suspension parts if I had the aftermarket parts on there. The rear struts were replaced under warranty with about 20,000 miles on them.

^^ Yes, but they can argue that you running aftermarket springs or hats caused those parts to wear out faster than they would have if kept stock.

So best bet is to kep the stock springs and tops and when the clunk attacks revert back to stock? its a pain but it ll be so nice when im lowered and cornering better then ever!

Sure, or just get some coilovers so you don't have to worry about clunk at all.

Haha that was my first solution, but now i would rather not spend as much as i wanted to when i first got the car. The reviews on the GF210's are amazing so springs should be enough for me. Im guessing they wouldnt replace the struts before i get the clunk anyways huh? Why not just do a recall and get it over with instead of waiting for it to happen? hmmmmm

Of course they could, but it's a known problem with the stock struts. Anyway, I'm running after market springs and tops and got mine replaced. That was the question in the first place.

Going back to stock is probably your best option if you develop the clunk on after market springs and tops.

Angry me to!!!!!

16000 kms ....I heard a little clunky clunky behind me very slow idle speeds........ hmmm sounds like a strut...???? Let me go to my favorite subie forums and see what the 'guys' have to say.... WHOA !!! Some cheap jap scrap design!!!

My only question after reading Hundreds of posts IS: OverALL how do the OEM replacements last??? I am used to struts lasting within reasonable use 5-10yrs!!!!!! This is pure BS, all the rally driving and this is the design and parts used???? Gimme a break Fujitsu.....

hmmm after almost 40 miles on a rally stage this past weekend my clunking rear struts are now blissfully silent..... A front endlink loosened up, but the struts are now happy again.

Carry on.
