Well, I have this problem was well. I have an 05 with 11k miles. It started a good month ago and has been getting louder. Sounds like my left strut is falling off when I accelerate from a stop or come to a stop. Its a very annoying sound that makes our 34k sports car sound like a Hyundai. Is Subaru's only fix for this to replace the rear struts?

I guess I'm stuck bringin it to the dealer. Been too lazy to even do that...lol.

Sounds like a sealing issue inside the strut, in my case at least...

I doubt the hardened strut mounts solves the issue, I have the knocking even with those...

Mine started last week, and I have had pinks and group N hardened tops for 2 months. I have about 11k miles. It sounds like something is loose and banging in the trunk, especially when going over bumps at low to moderate speeds. Checked the tightness and position of everything -- It's got to be the struts. This is something Subaru knows about but won't address. I have too many aftermarket parts on the car for the dealer to warranty the struts. Very frustrating, to say the least.

Take it in anyway, Bluesmaster. You've probably read that others have had pinks/tops on and still gotten their struts replaced.

Default stock exhaust piping size?

Yeah, I'd definately get them to look at it. I'll take a look at the old ones that come off my car tomorrow and see if I can see anything that would account for the noise.

(Also posted in Kevin's clunk thread) By the way, the nasioc thread on this is actually worth a read... Just have some spare time first:

So has SOA introduced a recall for this yet or what?

Apparently not. Because it's not causing any handling/performance issues, they're taking their time on this one.

I actually read a large portion of that NASIOC thread. There were a couple of mentions of lubricating under a dust seal on the strut and they did not have the problem come back. Has anyone tried this? Got any pics of this lube point? I don't have the clunk (yet) but it would be nice to have a solution if and when it shows up (or maybe prevent it).

Captains Log, Stardate 01/31/05:

I contacted my local dealer and made an appointment for Thursday. The clunk sound is much worse today - which makes me wonder if...

a) While my car make it to Thursday?
b) Is the sound temp related, like others have suggested? It is about 20 degF warmer today than the previous week.

One funny thing on my brief phone call. The service manager said... "Do you have an Outback or a Legacy?" I thought they sold a few more models than that. Kind of reminded me of one of my favorite Blues Brothers lines... "We have both kinds - country AND western."

That's classic!! I had mine replaced yesterday, took about three hours and everything is back to good.

Here I thought you drove an STI all this time...

I have an appointment next Wednesday with Becker Subaru in PA. I called and the order taker said "he hasnt heard of anything like this yet"

So we will see how it pans out for me as well. Mine was loud as hell coming here today. Anyone notice that when the car sits in the cold for a while, it will be silent for a while?

Forgive me if I missed something in all this. Is there a different strut manufacturer we can go with? Are the ones from the dealer the only ones that work/fit our car? Or is this larger than a simple "brand" defect (bad suspension geometry or something)?
