I knew the WRX clutch and tranny had problems, but haven't heard anything about the STI, which most people say is pretty sturdy. If you launch the car hard, you are going to get clutch shudder eventually, but I don't want to point any fingers so I don't know if this is true in your case. Maybe you just got a bad clutch.

Dealer replaced my strut, no questions. They were aware of the issue.

Metric Subaru

I think they test drove the **** out of it tho. They put on 4 miles! Bastards!

I just got back from Salt Lake City on Tuesday, and have noticed the return of the clunking to the right rear area. I parked the car and opened the trunk, pushed down on the bumber, and it definitely is the strut again.

What is the best approach to get Subaru to replace both rear struts instead of just the faulty strut?

Dealer wouldnt replaced both struts for me, no matter what I said. I believe it just depends on the dealer you go to and if they have the parts in stock or not.

My 04 (11k miles) started doing this awhile back and I ended up bringing it to the dealership, they checked it out and confirmed that both rear struts need to be replaced. It's going in on Sept 5th to have them replaced under warrenty. Hopefully these new ones will last a little longer.

Do you know if the dealership is replacing with same struts or do they have one now that won't be messed up?

Mine are bad but I don't notice any performance issues so I am reluctant to have them replaced until they have ones that won't go bad again.

Thats odd that they are putting the 05 struts in.. cuz i have an 05, and i have the clunking.

I had the same clunking over any tiny bump at low speeds. I got to the dealer with 8 miles left on my warranty! They found the driver's side rear strut leaking and replaced it under warranty. No more clunk! The invoice cost was $530.

2004 STi w/22,300 miles. I've had the clunk since about 12k miles but it has steadily gotten worse. It went from only happening over bumps at slow speeds to happening when starting from a standstill as well. Dealer is replacing both rear struts because they are "loose"...I have a strange feeling that the replacement struts will also suck and I'll be forced to go aftermarket at some point. Ohlins here I come!

I've had the same problem for quite some time too. Yesterday was the first I found out about other cars having this same issue. Hopefully I can get mine covered. I've had it in twice for this sound and one time they said they couldn't hear anything and the last that it was my 'aftermarket mud flaps' making the sound. Screw that, my flaps don't make any noise. I'm making an apointment as soon as I can and will take them for a ride so they hear what I hear and fix it.

Also, has anyone had a whurring sound come from the right rear in addition to the clunk? It's a cycling whur whur whuring type sound, not that this helps much. I've been told it is excessive tire noise, but I've had an alignment and even rotated tires and it is still there. Again the dealer has checked it out and says that nothing is wrong.

Default Ok Im Pissed Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK IM PISSED OFF...Are they replacing all of you guys struts like the whole strut or just the top mounts...cause like i said in my post just above i had it fixed like say a month month and a half ago and the noise came back...they said OH IF THE NOISE COMES BACK WE MIGHT HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE STRUT...I remind the guy that he said this and hes all like ah well i cant just replace the strut i gotta see what wrong first...the first time the noise came it was on the rear passenger side...now i swear its on the same side and i said to replace it and now hes saying oh its coming from the drivers side rear...Quote " Oh no Ron its coming from the drivers side now...yeah its the TOP STRUT MOUNT not the whole strut"...Im starting to think they dont want to JUST REPLACE the WHOLE STRUT!!! cause thats what it seem like to me ahh no its not the strut its the TOP MOUNT...like i said it sounds and i bet my life on it that its coming from the same side as the first time the passenger side...i think they just want to keep putting new top mounts on...and my warranty is up in about 7,000 miles...if this clunk comes back im gonna flip the hell out...that will be the third time...im gonna say just ****ing replace the ****ing goddamn whole thing everything ****ing replace it...ahhh ok what do you guys think???!!!
