So would this all be solved with an aftermarket set of struts/shocks, and group n top mounts?

i am in the club too. at 10k my first left rear went. the dealer offered to replace it under warranty but wanted a week and one half. i had to make a trip so i bought a v9 spec C RA set from JDMpartSTX and had them fedexed to me ($280 for overnight!). i installed those (bump gone!) now, 2k miles later, bump be back. same corner. what the hell is with subaru installing this junk from kayaba? it's def. the strut...again. after 2k miles! this is really almost unbelievable.

Mark me in as part of the crowd. I get my left rear strut replaced tomorrow. It was doing the same thign everyone described. I can push down on the back and it doesnt come up all the way and I can pull it back up to its original position.
Also, where do you guys jack up the car? I got a quickie oil change cause i didnt have time and they jacked up the car ont he rear strut bracket, making it bend into a U. So when I hit bumps, the strut would hit the rim of the U and clunk.

Im around 6K miles too.
They found that the normal road gunk/salt/whatever would would get in there and somehow cause the gas to leak. I held my old strut and I could hold it lengthwise in front of me and put it together (about 55-60 lbs of of force). The new one, I couldnt even budge it...I had to put in on the ground and use by body weight (200+lbs). Afterwards, the car was more responsive and felt stiffer, especially when making hard right turns.

I just got my 04 back (~35,000 miles) after having warranty work done, they replaced both rear struts, they also replaced the fuel sender and rear diff but thats another story. So far so good, but based on others results I'm sure the new struts will start knocking soon enough.

Moving this to a new forum regarding warranty issues since it has developed into a good resource for people.

All little more detail. Both rear struts and strut mounts were replaced. The part numbers for the new struts: Right strut 20360FE841, Left strut 20360FE851

Just got back from the dealer... I needed a rear strut and they had it in stock, so I had it replaced while I was there. Part number on the receipt is 20360FE851, the description is "strut compl". It doesn't say anything about a mount but my guess is that is part of it. Anyway, the noise is gone but something else seems different, for the better, but I can't put my finger on it. Hopefully it will not come back. The service guy said he had a couple STi come in for the same thing and so far none have come back.

I'm surprised they only replaced a single strut on your 2004...

Is it the norm to have both replaced? Only one was making noise and I heard of most people only getting the one replaced even when they asked for both. Well if the other goes I will definitely go back.

It really depends on how "used" your OEM struts were. The decision is completely at the service writer's discretion. I asked for both (at ~10k miles), but was told that 10k wasn't enough to worry about.

If you look back through this thread, you will see a few people had both replaced even though only one clunked.

How many miles are on your '04?

I have the same strut clunk. I took it to the dealership and they want to take apart the rear suspension before they replace anything. I really wish there was a recall for the struts, it would make the process much easier.

The Subaru Rep told me that for something like clunking struts he believed in replacing both. My dealer, I'm sure would only have replaced one if it had been their call. Their first shot at it they only replaced 1 strut mount which of course did nothing.
