Default 08 sti cold start issue and 60+ mph howl/whine

i've had my 08 sti with 29k miles for a week. its been in the twenty's every morning and every time i start it, it barely idles for a little bit before jumping to 1500-2000 rpms to warm up but two times now its died repeadily instead of ever jumping up to the higher rpm. also last night i noticed a howl or hum that progressively gets louder over 60 mph. i know it sounds dumb but it has a harmonic tone kinda like the gets higher and lower pitched in a steady tone in a weeeoooooowwwweeeeoooowwww form lol! its not rpm specific but speed specific and depressing the clutch doesnt make i go away. it ecos in the cabin so i'm having trouble telling where exactly its coming from.

as far as a tune goes i know its setup on the update tune from subaru which i know isnt much better than the original ringland eating one and i plan on getting it open sourced asap but i'm thinking maybe a vacuum problem can be whats causing the cold start issue but i'm not sure because once its warmed up the rpms stay steady and smooth.

also just a random question? the stock turbo seem WAY louder than it shoud be. i dont remember any stock car making so much noise from the turbo. i've had a dsm, srt4, and the my fiance's 335i definately cant be heard. i'm going to try to find some time to take it to the dealer this week but i dont have alot of faith in our local subaru dealer since i tried to get a compression/leakdown test done after i got home from buying the car in utah and they said why and i mentioned ringland failure on 07-08's and the guy said "that's only if its been abused" and when i mentioned the TSB about the ringland failure he said "well there has to be a problem for us to check it and its running fine"

To OP, i think something is wrong with your car. Can't say what.

Oh and something might be wrong with your dealer too

bought it in salt lake city utah and drove it back 15 hours to lubbock, tx. is it normal for it to idle so rough on a cold start in cold weather like it has been?

there is no basis to your reasoning. In fact, I think reason is out of your reach. You can barely read and write.

Mr. Green, bad idle can be many things. Bad/cold weather is not one of them. I get -20 here and my car idles just fine. Find a decent subaru dealer/tech and have them look at it. Leave the car there overnight and let them experience the problem first hand.

ya good call on the compression and leakdown test, that's the only real way to find out if its an internal/motor related problem instead of some much more minor problem like a bad vacuum leak somewhere. unforunately, finding out if a cynlinder isnt holding compression is a much more straightforward problem and solution type deal. finding that small problem that is hopefully causing this issue (being optomistic that it is one) is going to be more time and financially consuming.

find a shop in your area that has good prices on compression and leakdown tests, if you want to save money, just get a compression test and make sure you have them give you a print out. so, if anything is wrong you can easily take it back to the dealer and show them the physical proof so they can start your rebuild. physical evidence (the mileage on the car since purchase) is in your favor as it is impossible for a dealer to use an argument that involves blaming you for abusing the car in practically no time owning the car. seems like youve already got your feet wet in one of the most intense problems that almost all subaru owners face : incompetent, decitful, and lazy dealerships.
