| The Next Petter Solberg Feedback Score: 2 reviews | I drop my car off at 10 30 at the dealer bc my brakes squeal when I am moving at all times. I have 29700 miles on the car. The pads need to be changed. I called at 230 and he said hold on. And then let me call you back. An hour later no call back. I call and he said ok here's the deal. "I called the factory and the pads are 500$ almost 600. And he said you need front and rear pads and he said labor would cost 200$ he said they agreed to pay for the pads but I would pay for labor. I said it's under warranty why do I have to pay anything? He said that's what the factory said. Is this bs? Do I really have to pay labor? He said thevpads would be here Thursday and they would have to turn the rotors. I had my car there for almost 6 hours thinking they would have done something. |

IWSTI Addict since: Nov 2004 | If your under the 3yr/36K mi then its ALL covered. The dealer is lying to you, or they really have no idea what they're talking about. And if your car is at the dealer for warranty work, the rental car/ loaner car is covered by them also. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 | I had a similar experience with a dealer in MD on replacing brakes under warranty. They said that I had less than 3% on the front and less than 5% on the rear at 35,000 miles. Pads had to be ordered for my car as well. They also forced me to sign a release form saying I acknowledge the fact that my car is unsafe to drive and that I will not hold the dealer responsible for any accident (indemnity?) due to the poor condition of the brakes. The $800 price tag for repair seemed excessive so I decided to install them myself. Long story short, it cost me $100 in parts and an hour of install time and my old pads were still in decent condition (I guess I drive like a grandma). I found out later on the Subaru website that all wear items are covered under warranty. So either the service rep didn’t know how to do her job or the dealership makes a common practice of taking advantage of their customers. I understand you have to make money to stay in business, but they pressured me to have a service performed that was unnecessary. They also overestimated repair time (took me an hour and they wanted 2 hours) and the stock pads seem to be overpriced compared to the performance (and value) of aftermarket pads. This is why I avoid the dealership whenever I can. |

Subaru will cover the brake pads under their 3/36k wear item warranty when they are worn. They are considered worn when they are below specs in the service manual. IIRC, the specs are 1.5-2mm. Also Subaru will cover a rental only if the repairs take longer than 1 day to complete or if they have to order parts. -Your forum Subaru advisor

IWSTI Addict since: Nov 2004 | This has nothing to do with a bad or good dealership. The repair time is set by Subaru not the dealership. And the pads are OEM with the prices being set by Subaru, again not the dealership. |

If the repair is not under warranty, then Subaru has no say in what labor time guide each dealership uses. Also if the repair is not warranty, then Subaru has no say in how much each dealership can charge for a part. Dealers can sell parts more than what Subaru suggests for a retail price.
