Default I have a feeling this is going to get ugly

Just got this STI maybe 4 or 5 months ago

first thing I did was go to STS and get a set of four new tires so I didnt have to worry about the winter

Just recently I hit a pot hole and damaged my tire, so I took it back to STS to claim the warranty on it and get a new tire... while it was there it was time for an oil change so I said what the hell go ahead and do it

1000 miles later I hear rattling (sounded like a lifter) and the low oil light came on... I peak under the car and oil is all over the place, I check the dip stick and its bone dry.

I get the car to a subaru dealership and they determine the oil filter has a hole in it. The oil blew out over the course of about 1000 miles. Whoever did the oil change at STS managed to somehow shear a few holes in the bottom of the filter... jesus christ... its not that hard to screw a filter on without totally screwing it up

the oil ran out thursday of last week, friday I went to STS and they said monday (today) a regional rep would contact me... big suprise, nobody called.

im extremely upset right now and its 39 dollars a day to rent a car

Im going to be raising hell and will be getting progressively more aggressive with my demands as time goes on. I being very patient at first to see if STS comes through and handles this properly...

Just posting this because I need to vent, and suppose I'd like to hear about similar experiences... Im also welcoming any advice or comments.

FYI: im not sure any of the engine is damaged just yet, subaru is waiting until STS gets involved to dig into the engine deeper so there is cold hard proof STS was to blame and to cover my ass.

Subaru has been on my side and very helpful with everything so far

Damn sorry to hear that man. I recognize you from MW!

I would definitely get pictures and have the advisor/Subaru get something in writing for you and have STS pay the entire costs of what needs to be fixed.

you need a new longblock. trust me on this one
you'll be looking at ~$8000 in parts and mostly labor.

ps: who or what is STS?

The car may be fine now, but all it takes is one time for the oil to be low to score up the cylinders. It has happened where people have ran the car low on oil and have had damage later on down the road.

that is what im worried about... whos to tell that a few hundred thousandths of an inch havnt been scored or grinded off of any one of the hundreds of moving parts between the shortblock/heads/turbo that would cause failure somewhere down the road

at the very least if subaru says that the engine is "okay" im going to demand that STS buys me an extended warranty from the company of my choice to cover my ass from future breakdowns because of this

My factory warranty is expired in less than 2,000 miles.

edit: MW :glenn:

haha i recognize you too broly :word:

yea man, they aren't going to drain anything or take the oil pan off until sts is there to see if there are any metal shavings... I honest to god shut the car down right away when I noticed something was up

but we all know that low oil light doesnt come on until its waayyyy too late...

STS is a local chain, kinda like a firestone, or goodyear... they are kinda known to bee a little bit more trustworthy then a grease monkey or jiffy lube...

Im guessing it stands for "superior tire service" I may be wrong...

My GF suggested they call it IOC instead, which she explained is inferior oil change

You are better off having them type up a document stating that they will cover and assume responsibility for any engine damage that is a result of this. An extended warranty company even if purchased by them can deny coverage of that engine if it shows lack of maintenance or in your case it was ran on low oil. Remember why should the warranty company have to pay for STS's mistake even if it the warranty plan was paid for by STS. Now if you have STS legally promise to cover any future damage that is a result of their mistake, then you would be better off.

Oh

A buddy of mine's brother took his car to a jiffy lube and they didn't tighten the filter all the way and a couple hundred miles later his motor blew the f*** up. The jiffy lube place denied it and the dealership wouldn't do it on them.

luckily, once cooperate was involved the jiffy lube had to fix it.

That's surprising. We do Jiffy Lubes mishaps all the time for them. I haven't seen one where they wouldn't cover it. The main culprit is draining the trans/diff and adding engine oil. Heck they keep me and the KIA guys busy at times.

Unfortunately, it happens a lot. Last week we just did a transmission job for Jiffy Lube on a Forester.

Any luck on your case?

everytime i take my tacoma to these express lube places, i ALWAYS check before i leave to see if the cap is back on, oil level is full and if there are leaks anywhere.

Good luck with your fight!

This is why I change my own oil! To many jerks out their who don't give a hoot about anyone. I bet any money the person who worked on your car might have done this on purpose! To many idiots out their. If I were to work on a high performance can I would take that extra two seconds to make sure it was right! You know the customer is going to ***** if ya don't.

I've always changed my own oil in the past, especially on my old supercharged mustang...

The thing is, I just moved into an apartment complex and Im not really supposd to be working on cars, doing oil changes in the parking lot...

also, I park in a different spot every day so finding an obvious oil leak from my car... the chances are slim to none
