In the turbo, man. trans cars you perform:

oil change
Tire rotation
air filter change
rear dif fluid change
coolant change
suck the brake fluid out of res. and refill
fuel injector cleaner
inspect brakes, cv boots, belts etc
take a test drive

This is what we did when I worked as a tech at a dealership

there is only an in tank fuel filter on the STi so that is only replaced when needed
Spark plugs are replaced at 60k

They change the transmission fluid as well... The cabin filter can be bought on EBay for around 15 bucks shipped and it is a very easy install. There is a How To out here some where.

Yeah thats insane! Its not hard at all. Unless you track or really abuse your car I wouldn't worry about changing your trans fluid yet.

so basically, its $400 for tranny & dif fluids, plus coolant, plus air filter and oil change lol.

What a joke.

I'm changing my coolant this weekend...everything else is done regularly. Just did my tranny/rear diff.

That is fine. If you can do it, that's great then.

For $400 bucks I offer quite a bit more than what you listed. For me, the WRX/STI/LGT enthusiast are a very small part of my customer base(maybe 10%). Many people pay for services for the convenience that
A. They do not have time in their schedule to do it
B. They do not know how, or can't do it.
C. They rather have a dealer do it for warranty purposes.

I will agree that paying $800 is a pure rape for doing a 30k.

i think ours was something like $300 for the 03 WRX. the second time it was $19.95.

i had already taken it in for the 30k service at around 26k because of a trip we were taking. when we got back into town my wife took it in for a routine oil/filter/lube job. they did the 30k service and when she saw the bill, she said that she thought she remembered it already being done. it was in the computer, so that ate the bill (like they should have) then took it around for a wash and vacuum (also routine).

as for what needs being done and what is personally considered as should be done, i figure that keeping the 80k mile warranty active is worth it (plus the engineers picked those service intervals for a reason).

Isn't this basically tricking the customer into thinking you'd actually replaced the brake fluid like Subaru recommends? How can all of the old fluid be removed from the brake lines by simply sucking some out of the res?

If you do decide to do it yourself I would buy your parts from your Subaru dealership and keep the receipt so if you have any warranty issues down the road, you can say you used Subaru parts.

$300 for a full 30k service is basically just labor and tax around here! I wish shops around here charged that. I just usually do all my own tranny, diff, and engine oil changes, then bring it in to a local shop I trust to do the radiator stuff and inspections since I don't have a lift. I also keep the receipts just in case.

It's a better bet to do this stuff yourself. You don't want some guy who doesn't care about your car rushing through this stuff getting paid flat rate. The only way to ensure it's done right is to do it yourself.
