Default Engine Revving when i stop??

I've recently been having an issue where when i clutch and come to a stop, the engine revs on it's own up to about 2100 and holds for a few seconds before calming down. It's been doing it for a couple months, i took it in to Subaru but of course they said nothing was wrong and sometimes they just "do that". I've had the car 4 years and it's never just "done that" until recently so i'm trying to figure out what could be wrong...any suggestions of what i could look into or at least hound them to look into? Thanks.

I live in the Portland area. Took a vacation to Yellowstone last fall. The altitude change was +8000 ft. When I was in Yellowstone when I would disengage the clutch it would rev and extra 500rpm and then come back down. At sea level the RPM's would just drop the instant the clutch was pushed in. I'm not sure if this is a related problem. Sound to me like an air meterering problem or a computer issue.

These cars will rev a bit when the clutch is pushed in due to some emissions thing. I can't remember if it's to keep the cats hotter, or to burn the extra richness you get when the throttle plate slams closed.

My car does this exact same thing if im in traffic or in a drive through ... lol pretty annoying cause mine dosnt just calm down after a few seconds ... mine usually takes like 10 min just to settle back to normal...

My shop told me it was the throttle body area... the two lines one for the actually gas pedal and the other for the cruise control. what happens is the cable gets stuck, causing the engine to rev high, normally if you just drive around the cable goes back down. might want to check that out.

Hmm, i'll check that out about the cable.

Yeah what's odd about the whole issue is, it's never done this up until recently...if it had done it from the get-go i'd not question it, but since it's obviously different it makes me wonder... :/

Thanks for the responses, keep em coming and i'll update this as/if i find out more!

There's no cable. USDM STIs are drive by wire.

I've experienced this especially when the engine is hot.

Garo666 has a bugeye which has two cables. I've noticed the same behavour in my bugeye as my STI. I think the cruise control motor is used by the ECU for holding the revs between shifts, just like the TBW cars.

Either way, I hate it when the engineers try to second-guess my driving, or the EPA's requirements makes my car do thing I don't tell it to. Unfortunately, short of a standalone ECU, I don't think there's a fix.

not sure exactly, but it sounds like something is causing the ECU to adjust fuel trims to adjust so that it runs stoich at that particular load.

check that all your vacuum lines are connected properly.

Really? I might have to try that then. It's been happening to me for a couple months now to and it sucks. Especially when you pull up next to a police officer and you can't shut your car up!! Makes me roll the window down and tell the officer "sorry, my car has been doing that lately" lol, yeah it sucks.

i experienced those, buts it was when i had my ECU changed (OrientWorks' Result Magic JDM) during a test run...

i decided not to get the new ECU at that point (no budget, yet), and had OrientWorks had to put back my old ECU... then my car started doing those revs at idle - it only lasted for a couple of days, it was normal from then on...
