Default Synthetic Oil???

Hi guys, I went to the dealership today to make an appointment for an oil change. When I asked the guy at the counter to make sure they use synthetic oil on my 07 STi, they told me that they were having problems with synthetic oil and have been using regular oil. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what would you recommend? Thanks alot, STiboost21.

I never have encountered a problem with Synthetic oil on a Subaru as long as it is changed every 3500-3750.

I'd recommend telling the dealer to keep their goddamned opinions to themselves and change the goddamned oil. Right now. Before I get angry.

LOL, it IS an 07 afterall, its a pissy car. But yeah, if you want syn, then they should give you syn, if the engine blows its a new engine for you and proves the point they should get their crap together

dude. remember that dealerships overcharge for their services. so rather than saying to you "go somewhere else because 99.99% of our people (who all they drive are forresters) don't got a clue what synth is, and so we don't carry it," they will tell you:

"synth = bad for your car. We recommend you get our oil. bla bla blah."

I've had 2 dealerships try to talk me into standard oil. They were rather small ones so I figured they just didn't bother offering it. Just find a dealer that does, or if you're lucky to have a garage, just change it yourself.

yeah i just read another thread concerning this matter. basically, the problem comes from those who think that just because they'e running syn, that they can prolong the normal oil changes therefore throwing CELs and changing timings. you should be fine as long as you do the normal oil change intervals (at least every 3750 miles) when running syn. first change for me was at 2500 from the dealership who didnt opt me for an option of running syn...changed it myself at 5200 wit mobile1 syn and just now at 7300 trying out GC (euro 0w-30)...

What does the stock sti typically run at (temp wise) when it is heated up?
And for anyone with a numbered temp gauge with mild mods like added boost and what not have you increased temp?
Would a tbe make the car run cooler buy much?
Like would I benifit from 0w-20 just from around town driving?

the conventional wisdom is to get at least a few thousand miles on the motor before switching to synthetic.

re: viscosity, there is at least one very good thread in here about viscosity, posted by someone advocating lower viscosity oils. my own opinion is that you should probably pick the lowest a viscosity that also makes the most seasonal/climatic sense and see if your car likes it. my oem motor hated mobil 1 in 5w30 and burned it like crazy. i switched to high end motul and it solved the problem. your results may vary.

i'm running dino 15w40 in my cobb pro stage1. i haven't decided on a switch to synthetic yet.
