Default Dealer forgets oil cap?

So I get my 10k service done the other day and the day after i start to notice this terrible smell something like gasoline ( it was oil ) and this smoking coming from under my hood. so i pop the hood and I see there is no oil cap and oil is spilled everywhere around the engine bay and the battery.
I then took it to the dealership immediatley once i got there they alerted the manager, he came out apologized 9 million times and also yelled at the tech guys then and they put a new SPT cap on and promised a free detail. I feel like I could be compensated for a lot more and I feel like i'm looking at potential problems seing how there is oil all over my engine bay. Does anyone have any idea what im possibly looking at in the future as far as problems?

I dont think you will run into any problems as long as there was enough oil in the car and they clean up the mess.

Man that sucks!! Unfortunately accidents happen and it shows that even professionals make mistakes(seen it with very well trained and experienced techs). It was nice that he apologized and that he hooked you up with a free detail and SPT cap.

How do you think he could have compensated you more? A Detail is usually 75-120 bucks on average. Not only are they cleaning up the oil mess but also performing that detail too. I would rather a detail than a free oil change that costs them next to nothing.

The same exact thing happened to me today. I found out when I got home from the dealer and quickly called them. Their on the way now to my house to give me a replacement cap and some more oil. Good thing the oil didn't spill all over my engine bay. Can I ask which dealer did you go to? Mine was from chino valley subaru.

I would be more worried about dust and dirt getting in there driving with no cap on.

That's why I always check things like that and for leaks anywhere before even leaving the dealer lot.

I wouldn't worry about running it to low on oil. Because I installed a new turbo and the return line came off and my low oil light came on. We fixed the line and added like 3 and 1/2 quarts. She still runs like a dream.

this is why you always pop your hood open after they finish to check EVERYTHING. well, i do my own changes now on my sti but for our tacoma, i pop the hood at the dealer and check all the caps, drips, tools etc... It is pretty common to find techs (usually oil change boy) leaving things in the engine bay such as tools and forgetting to screw the caps back on. oh, and lets not forget to check the oil level before you leave.

btw, if the manager already decided to give you a detail, I would highly suggest going to a professional detailer to get all the oil out of your engine bay and ask them to pay for it. If you haven't notice yet, dealer detail SUCKS! Sure, they charge 120 bucks for detail but they do jack ****. Even worse, rather than cleaning your car, they probably create even more scratches.

well, they replace the little foam under the hood today from the oil mess. and plan on doing a full interior and exterior "detail" so i'll see how that goes

I need to resurrect this.

So, OP, you're saying they forgot to put the oil cap on, and oil shot out all over the place (in the engine bay obviously)? Any reason for this? Very little oil comes out of mine when I leave it off...

They could've over-filled it or something...?

^Yea, that's what I was thinking. I always fill mine to exactly 4.5 quarts, but there is a lot of confusion on the actual amount needed. I just do mine that way because it's never given me any problems.
