IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | I've read up quite a bit on the huge 07 sti ring and piston failure etc. I recently saw blue smoke for the first couple seconds out of my exhaust on a cold start. It's happened several times, but never when I'm driving it. Only at the start. I'm going to bring it into the dealership this week. I'm all stock except for a drop in k&n filter. I was told that this small of a mod on an otherwise completely stock car can cause an increase in airflow significant enough to make at least one cylinder run lean (due to running out of pump when the injectors go static) and fail prematurely on the stock map. So this is coming out immediatley. My question.. I have also cut my intake silencer recently. I duct taped the bottom part, so it looks similar to a kidney. Will this have negative affects in the same way? Is it a good idea to source a new silencer before I bring it in to avoid any possible dealer denial? This ad is not endorsed by this member. IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (24) | The dealership would be unable to prove that either of those mods caused failure. An air filter or silencer delete alone are not going to cause an overly lean condition. The maf sensor compensates for the improved flow from the air filter. The intake silencer is merely an air resonator. Removing it only smooths out the flow of air into the filter box. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2006 Trader Rating: (24) | i agree. Some dealerships will do their best to get out of covering warranty work. If i were you and i didn't know how my dealership felt about simple mods, i would do my best to find the stock pieces. I have a stock resonator i'd be willing to part with if you need it. |

| Spec C Club | buy a new silencer so you don't have to explain anything. Have a friend buy it, replace it, take the car in. If you do have some sort of failure I highly doubt it would have been caused by doing the silencer delete ir the K&N. |

IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | But you're in Chi-town. I have a local search for one right now. If I cant come across one, I'll be getting back to you. For the record, how much do you want for it shipped to Minnesota? |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | Before you jump to any conclusions, have you changed the oil recently? If so, overfilling on oil can easily cause smoke on startup. The best way to find out if engine damage is imminent or has already occurred is to do a compression test. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2004 Trader Rating: (0) | A air filer and cut silencer WILL NOT cause any problems of such nature. Total bullcrap. Ive got 65000mi on my 04 and ive been stage2+ (SRI, ELH, TBE) for 40+K miles with absolutly no problems as you describe. |

Not to start a huge debate but the 07's are a fair bit different then the 04-06's. People have datalogged IDC's of 100% on the stock tune at sea level. Running out of fuel on basic mods is atleast possible in the right conditions.

Right, and add in a higher flowing airfilter and the problem can be worse since the car already isn't getting enough fuel (already flowing the max possible fuel).

IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | Hey guys..let not do this. This is just what one highly saught after subaru guru from nabisco told me. It's not that big of a deal what someone else said. I just want to make sure the dealership has no reason to blame this or that for this issue. It's got 9700 on the clock and I'm not due for another oil change until 11,500. I checked the oil today and it was a little overfilled. Just a slight bit past the top indent. For the record, I don't know the first thing about doing a compression check, nor do I have the tools to accomplish this task. I am going to bring it into the dealership, my questions were mainly about the k&n filter and silencer box. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2007 Trader Rating: (0) | This discussion reassures me that I did the right thing by going with the AP v.2 at 600 miles or so. I now have about 4500 miles on the car and it hasn't hicupped once since the Cobb re-flash. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2004 Trader Rating: (0) | Well 100%IDC on STi's is really not a big deal since they are maxed out at the factory. I would be suprised if a air-filter could really cause any hughe issues. |

IWSTI Addict since: Jun 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I had the same issue with my 07 after the dealer changed the oil.... sometimes when I started the car, a HUGE puff of white smoke would come out. The smoke was only on start up... never during driving. Afterwards, I changed the oil myself and haven't had any smoke problems. Of course, my car is 14 months old and only has 3800 miles on it so I don't know if it was the oil that caused the problem or something else. |
