I tried Mobil 1 5w30 once in my WRX at around 20000 miles, and I didn't like it at all... too much piston slap, I know they say it's harmless, but the noise was pretty disturbing.. I switched back to the castrol gtx 5w30 at the next oil change, and never looked back... 120k miles on the engine, I change my oil approx. every 3 months (5000 miles), subaru or fram filters. Still haven't decided what I'll do with the new STI..

I was at my dealer yeaterday for an oil change, and an inspection sticker, and they asked if I wanted Cam II synthetic, or regular Valvoline ? So, I'd have to assume that synthetic is definately OK with SOA now. They still require you to have it changed every 4,000 miles. So, what's the point ? If I'm going to change it every 3,000 anyway with dino oil, so why pay twice as much for Royal Purple, for example ?

I've been running Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (a.k.a., "German Castrol" or simply "GC") at roughly 5,000 intervals for some time now in my '05 STi. I've posted all my used oil analysis (UOA) results over on the Bob is The Oil Guy forums (I'm "AndyH" over there as well). This oil has performed very well, and nothing indicates that the oil needed to be changed sooner (if anything, it had additional life in it).

Those of you that are changing your synthetic oil every 3,000 miles are just wasting your money (IMHO). But hey, I understand oil is cheaper than a new engine...so feel free to change your oil with whatever frequency makes you feel comfortable.
